Research Notes

Probable christening records for Sara(h). There are only two records, each showing a birth/christening for a Sara(h) Hawkins during the time period of 1590-1605, daughter of John Hawkins. Those records show a christening of Sara Hawkins on 12 Jun 1599 in Bentley, Hampshire, England.[2][3]

Hi Roger, all,

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.

Hoping to learn if there are historical records and analysis showing that this Sarah Hawkins married the particular John Knight, John Knight Sr (1595-abt.1670), who became an immigrant to New England.

I have reviewed the entry about John Knight Sr (1595-abt.1670) in Noreen C. Pramberg, Four generations of the descendants of John Knight and his brother, Richard Knight ... (Newburyport, Mass. : Parker River Researchers, 1986), 1, 3; digital images, InternetArchive (borrow). This author (page 3) includes Sarah Hawkins as a first wife, wherein she writes, "John .... married first Sarah Hawkins 27 January 1615 in Romsey, England" (no indication of double dating), further reporting Sarah died 27 April 1623.

Pramberg doesn't cite a sources for this marriage, nor does she provide related analysis except to write (page 1),

"Research in England. This researcher has done no research in England. The dates and places in England quoted in the text were evidently the result of research commissioned from Sir Richard Luce, by Walter Goodwin Davis in the early 1940s; and by William Sumner Appleton in the late 1880s. The accuracy of these dates cannot be attested to by the author of this book. However, all of these genealogists enjoy excellent reputations."

Given what we know separately, including work on John Knight by Davis, and still later, by Robert Charles Anderson, without further work, Pramberg's claim seems insufficient to associate PGM John Knight Sr (1595-abt.1670) with this marriage,

(a) In his profile of the immigrant, Walter Goodwin Davis did not associate Sarah Hawkins marriage with John Knight Sr (1595-abt.1670). See Walter Goodwin Davis, The Ancestry of Phoebe Tilton, 1775-1847 (Portland, ME: The Anthoensen Press, 1947), pp 235-237; digital images, Hathi Trust,

(b) In his profiling of the immigrant, Robert Charles Anderson also did not associate a marriage to Sarah Hawkins with John Knight Sr (1595-abt.1670). See Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration, Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, Volume IV, I-L (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2005), 210-211; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors.

(c) While not unheard of, our John Knight (PGM) would have been young (say 20) at the time of this proposed first marriage.

(c) Also while not unheard of, it is noteworthy that no children's births are reported to this claimed couple over the some eight years of their marriage.

Work that would improve our ability to better prove that this marriage should be associated with the immigrant might include,

(i) A complete citation with detailed transcription of the Knight-Hawkins marriage record, and an exhaustive search for any related records. But a few of the questions the records might answer--Was this a first marriage for both (was she a maiden and he, a bachelor)? Are either of their residences or home parishes known?

(ii) Ditto, for the Knight-Carter marriage, including an exhaustive search for related records. Are we able to learn if this was a first marriage for bride and groom--or was it a second marriage for the groom?

Thoughts? --Gene

In Anderson's article, he elaborated on the English records used by Walter Goodwin Davis, writing that Davis, "did not examine the Romsey, Hampshire, parish registers himself," and he relayed information from one of Davis' footnotes. Anderson then wrote, "Examination of a microfilm copy of the original registers demonstrated that the interpretation [of the registers] was incorrect, and that Davis had been ill-served by his correspondent in England, who missed not only the baptismal record for Richard Knight but the marriage record of John Knight, and misread some of the entries." Finally, after explaining that these registers are easy to read, Anderson wrote, "we have read the Romsey parish registers for the years from 1592 to 1605 and from 1620 to 1635, resulting in a number of entries additional to or different from those reported by Davis."

Hi Roger,

Thank you for your kind comments.

We might want to G2G this one, in the hope the good folks with better access to English records can assist. It would be nice to have some clarity to the Romsey parish registers for that intervening period, 1615-1620, and perhaps learn about other records that might help. --Gene
