Biography

Thomas Henry Hawthorne was born in 1871, the son of weaver John Hawthorne and his wife Susan Hamilton.^[1] He was born in the townland of Ballagawan [Ballygowan] in the parish of Aghaderg, Co Down.^[2]

Thomas married Emily Hale on 22 July 1895, in Scarva Street Presbyterian Church, Banbridge, Co Down.^[3] The bride and groom were both of full age and previously unmarried. Thomas was a railway porter living in Banbridge, Emily was also living in Banbridge, and her father was John Hale, a fireman. The witnesses were John Arnott and Jane Arnott.

The couple had at least nine children:

Thomas died on 13 Mar 1952: ^[16]

“HAWTHORNE – March 13, 1952, at Banbridge Hospital, Thomas H, beloved husband of Emily S Hawthorne. Funeral on Saturday from his son’s residence, 60 Primrose Gardens, at 2pm to Scarva Street Presbyterian Burying-ground. House private. – Deeply regretted by his sorrowing Wife and Family.” ^[17]
