Margaret Hawthorn was born in 1883, the eldest child of labourer Samuel Hawthorn and his wife Martha Fulton.[1] She was born in the townland of Collinward in Carnmoney, North Belfast.
In the 1901 Census, 17-year-old Margaret was a boarder in the Wilton Street home of Jane Tate.[2] She, alongside Jane Tate's two daughters and two other female boarders, was employed as a flax spinner in a linen mill.
In 1911, Margaret was living with younger sister Isabella in Canmore Street.[3] 28-year-old Margaret was a smoother in a laundry, while Isabella was a linen yarn spinner.
