Adam Hawthorn was born in 1889, the son of miller Samuel Hawthorn and his wife Martha Fulton.[1] He was born at
24 Benwell Street, Belfast,
In the 1901 Census, 11-year-old Adam was living in the family home on Fourth Street.[2] He was still attending school at the time.
In 1911, Adam was a boarder in the Islandbawn Street home of Mary Ann Nutt.[3] He was employed as a labourer.
Adam emigrated to Canada at some point in the next few years.
In 1916, Adam was living in Toronto and joined the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force.[4] The date of birth he gave (12 Jul 1890) was wrong but he lists his sister Isabella as his next of kin.
In December 1916, he married Alice Elizabeth Smith in Toronto.[5] Alice died in 1920.[6]
In 1924 he married Edith May Herring in Toronto.[7]
