William Hawthorne Sr. Dies In Bay City, Michigan, April 8

WILLIAM HAWTHORNE

Last week's ECHO stated that word had come from Bay City, Michigan that the editor's father, William Hawthorne, was very low, preparing us for the message which came on Saturday morning that he had passed away and that the body would be brought to Granville for burial, which was done Sunday afternoon via of La Salle. The funeral was held from the Granville Congregational church on Monday afternoon with interment in the family lot in the local cemetery.

The body arrived from La Salle on Sunday about one o'clock in charge of Undertaker Peterson and was kept at the home of W. E. Hawthorne till time for the service on Monday. Rev. R. Kidder Stetson, pastor of the church to which all the Granville relatives belong, delivered a very appropriate address. A quartet composed of Miss Birdie Opper, Mrs. W. L. Child, Mr. C. E. Fay and Mr. E. E. Edgerley furnished the music which was much appreciated by the family. Miss Opper also sang "Face to Face". Three of the sons and three of the grandsons acted as pall bearers. The funeral cortege was made up entirely of automobiles.

Floral tributes were very numerous and beautiful. Those from Bay City, were from Dr. and Mrs. C. H. Baker, next door neighbors to S. D. Hawthorne, with whom the deceased made his home; Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Ritz, Secretary of the Y.M.C.A., of which Mr. S. D. Hawthorne was president many years; Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of which Mrs. Hawthorne is a member; The Fellowship Class, S. D.'s Sunday school class and from The Valley Ice and Fuel Company of Bay City, of which S. D. is Secretary and Treasurer. From Granville the Fay-Hawthorne Sunday school class and the Misses Holm and F. L. Glass, associates of the editor in the ECHO office, and the relatives offered some beautiful pieces making a very large floral tribute. The flowers, as has become a custom in Granville, were made into bouquets after the funeral and distributed among the sick and shut-ins.

Many kindly expressions of sympathy were received from friends, none of which were more appreciated by the editor than the ones from the teachers of the local school, with whom he is associated as a member of the Board of Education.

The relatives from out of this community who were present were Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Hawthorne of Bay City, Michigan; O. E. Hawthorne of Fulton, Missouri; Mr. And Mrs. H. M. Mills of Chicago; Mrs. Amanda McKnight of Normal, Illinois; Mrs. Emma Dunlap of St. Louis; Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Scofield of Crissman, Indiana; W. Henry Hawthorne and family of Chenoa, Illinois; Harvey Salisbury, Mrs. Mason Bullock and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Raymond of Tonica, Illinois.

William Hawthorne was born in Brown County, Ohio December 28, 1830, the third William Hawthorne in succession and William IV in the family. His father died a short time before his son was born and the only father he ever knew was his step-father, Shepherd Moore who married Mrs. Hawthorne in 1833 and came at once to Illinois, settling in this community west of Granville. The boy grew to manhood upon the farm and was a farmer all his life except a few years while engaged in the coal and feed business in Normal, Illinois. He preempted a farm now owned by John Neumann [sic: Naumann] Sr., four and a half miles southeast of the village. September 14, 1853 he married Miss Susan D. Findley of Granville to whom six children were born, two dying in infancy, the other four being present at the funeral; Shepherd D., William E., Orin E. and Jennie Mills. Mrs. Hawthorne died Sept. 7, 1864 at the age of 30 years and 18 days.

A few years later Mr. Hawthorne married the widow of a Presbyterian minister with one daughter, Mrs. Mattie Humphrey Scofield. To this union six children were born; Mabel died at three years of age, Roy at sixteen and Eva, Mrs. Blosser, at twenty-six, the last two of typhoid fever. The mother was a lady of unusual culture and had the love and admiration of her step-children. She died February 25, 1893, at her home in South Dakota. Her three remaining children are Glenn W. of Oregon, Birdie Brodkorb and Earl C. of South Dakota.

Twenty-four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren number his posterity.

For nearly a quarter of a century this aged father has made his home with his children in South Dakota, Illinois and Michigan. He longed to be at rest and often said heaven was his home, so on Saturday, April 18 [sic: 8], 1916 he entered into rest at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 10 days.
