Tom along with his brother Joseph Bolden Hawthorne served in Company K the 9th Louisiana, joined July 7, 1861, both were captured, sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, then released. They both rejoined the Civil War in Company M, the 12th Louisiana also known as The Jackson Greys. Tom was captured at Champion Hill (Baker's Creek May 16, 1863 in the Vicksburg Battle. He was sent to Memphis, Tennessee as prisoner, to Ft. Delaware, Point Lookout, Maryland, Sept. 23, 1863 then to Elmira Prison camp (New York) from August 18, 1864 to February 25, 1865. Prisoners were exchanged at James River, VA. in 1865 and Tom Hawthorne was among them. He was a Corporal in the 12th Louisiana. Joseph was a 2nd Corporal and is said to have been killed in Shelbyville, Tennessee. So far, what I have is he was slightly wounded July 23, 1864 on a skirmish line. From CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS AND COMMANDS OF LOUISIANA BY B. BOOTH pub. ReprintCo. Spartenburg, S.C. Tom and John David or J.D. Salter were part owners of Provencal land & Improvement Company which burned in 1912. This is documented in MEMOIRS OF LOUISIANA and printed in the Natchitoches Times twice. Tom and Mary Ann made their home in Provencal and were charter members of First Baptist Church along with Mary Ann's mother Martha McKennie Richey or Richie. Tom (T.W.), Mary Ann and Martha are all buried in the Provencal Cemetery.
