Biography

John was born in 1906. John was the child of James Hawthorne and Ellen Boyd. His birth was registered by Margaret Boyd of Balloo Islandmagee who was present at the time. [1]

On December 25th, 1940 John married Eileen Sleith in Belfast, Northern Ireland. [2]

John (Jack) moved to Belfast and worked as a platers helper in Harland & Wolff Shipyard, Belfast. While working with a large metal sheet it slipped and took off a thumb from the first joint. He played the Fiddle and the Accordian. He was in an accordian band in Islandmagee. He also was a Past Master of the local Orange Lodge in Islandmagee. After marriage the family lived at "Hill Top" Mullaghdubh for a while before moving to Hillman Street in Belfast. The family then moved to a permanent residence at 22 Ashley Drive, Belfast. John left an estate 365-2-0. £121-6-0 in Belfast Savings Bank & £243-6-0 in Belfast Co-Op.[3]

John passed away in 1965 (age 59).[4] He is interred in New Cemetery, Islandmagee (Plot# C36).**Note** Jack's Gravestone Inscription has his passing date as June 22nd, 1965.[5]
