James Hay, 1st Earl of Carlisle was born circa 1580 at Scotland. He was the son of Sir James Hay, of Kingask and Foodie and Margaret Murray.[1] and the grandson of Sir Peter Hay of Megginch.[2] James had siblings:
James came to England with the court of James VI of Scotland and became a naturalised Englishman.[1]
James was created Lord Hay, without a seat in the House of Lords, on 14 May, 1604.[1]
He married firstly, Lady Honora Denny, daughter of Edward Denny, 1st and last Earl of Norwich and Lady Mary Cecil, on 6 Jan 1603/4.[1] On 17 September, 1604, James I, King of England, granted Strixton Manor and other properties to Sir James Hay and Honora Denny and their lawful issue. Honora Denny was the sole heir of Sir Edward Denny. They had issue:
On March 12, 1612, James, Lord Hay, was named on the Third Charter granted by King James I of England to the Virginia Company of London, as one of the "Companie of Adventurers and Planters of the Cittie of London for the First Colonie in Virginia" ... "whoe have adventured and not bin sparing of their purses in such a noble and generous accion for the generall good of theire cuntrie."[5]
Lord Hay was created Baron Hay of Sawley, co York, in the Peerage of England, on 29 June, 1615.[1]
In 1616, Lord Hay was appointed ambassador to the Court of France, sworn in as a Privy Counsellor, and appointed Keeper of the Great Wardrobe, a post he held until his death.[4]
He married, secondly, Lady Lucy Percy, daughter of Henry Percy, 3rd Earl of Northumberland and Lady Dorothy Devereux, on 6 Nov 1617, in the King's presence, but without her father's consent.[1][2]
He was created Viscount Doncaster on 5 July, 1618.[1] In 1619, Viscount Doncaster was Ambassador Extraordinary to the Emperor Ferdinand II.[4]
On 13 September 1622, James Hay was created Earl of Carlisle, and was again that year Ambassador to France.[4] He was made a Knight of the Garter on 31 December, 1624, and appointed Governor of the Carribee Islands on 2 July, 1627.[1]
James Hay had a stroke on 13 Mar 1636, from which he recovered long enough to execute deeds placing his estate in trust, making arrangements for the payment of his debts and left his wife Lucy, the major interest in his Irish estates and monopolies, dying over a month later on 20 April, or on 25 April, at Whitehall.[1] His extravagant funeral procession, led by seventy poor men in mourning gowns, conveyed his body to St Paul's Cathedral He was buried on 6 May 1636 at St. Paul's Cathedral, The City, London, England.1 He died intestate and his estate was administered on 20 May 1637.[4]
