Biography

As far as I can tell, never married and her only child was fathered by the son of a wealthy malt merchant (Leonard Sedgwick Howell) who eventually married someone else in 1880. Annie however continued to use his surname for the rest of her life, or at least that's how it seems...

Rebecca's address on 26 October 1873 - 29 Royal Avenue, Chelsea was presumably her home with Leonard Sedgwick Howell. It is a very oppulent building today and presumably would have been then. A far cry from her subsequent life in East London.

Doesn't seem to get picked up by the 1911 census, the next time we hear of her is at her death in the Central Home, Leytonstone (previously the workhouse) where she dies at the age of 78, the last of the Hayes/Nettleton children.

As with her elder brother and youngest sister, there were name changes between birth registration and baptism. In her case the two names were switched round to make her Annie Rebecca, the order which she used for the rest of her life.
