Biography

Officiating priest at her wedding was Father Theobald Mathew ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobald_Mathew_%28temperance_reformer%29) who appears tho have been a friend of her father.

I have a contemporary report of the marriage which reads; ' At Kingstown, by the Very Rev. Theobald Mathew, James Roche Nagle Esq., eldest son of the late Richard Nagle Esq., Cork, to Ellen, second daughter of Edward Hayes Esq.' (Dublin Mercantile Advertiser, and Weekly Price Current 07 November 1845).

Due to the sometimes parlous state of Irish records and the infuriating 19th century habit of referring to women as simply Mrs. (insert husband's name), we know very little about her. What we do know is vicariously from press reports concerning her husband.

We know that she lived in Monkstown and I have picked up two press reports which concern her. Firstly, the sad death of her child on 10 February 1849 (reported as 'Raby' but could possibly be a misprint for 'baby'). Happily, this is balanced by another report concerning the birth of a daughter on 3 March 1851. Further research reveals that they had at least six children.

The only descendant of Edward Hayes that I have so far established who remained in Ireland.
