The Reverend William Hercules Hays was born circa 1750 in Midlothian County, Scotland, in what is now Edinburgh. After migrating to America in 1771[2], he met and married Mary Slack. In 1779 he moved his family to Kentucky, settling at Harrod's Station, near Harrodsburg. Around 1785 the family moved to Washington Co KY. He moved to Hardin County, Kentucky in the early 1800s. Reverend Hays was the founder of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church (approximately 4 miles from both Mooresville and Chaplin, Kentucky.
- A direct descendent of Rev. William Hays, Homer Edwin Carrico, filed for Sons of the American Revolution membership. His papers state that William Hays, husband of Mary (nee Slack) Hays, was born in Virginia and served under Captain John Holder's company in action against the Indians in Kentucky/Virginia (1778-79).

Mary married Reverend William Hercules Hays about 1777. William was born about 1750 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He died about 1822 in Hardin County, Kentucky.
Served in the Lincoln Co, Kentucky, Militia. Founder of the Mt Zion Methodist Church in 1792. Lived in Hardin Co, Kentucky, in 1810.

William Hays was born on 18 Mar 1778. He died about 1866.
James Hays was born in 1780 in Kentucky.
Margaret Hays was born on 2 Feb 1784. She died on 29 Mar 1857.
Hercules Hays was born on 8 Jan 1786 in Kentucky. He died on 4 Mar 1855 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He was buried in Mill Creek Cemetery, Hardin County, Kentucky. Hercules married Elizabeth Lusk on 18 Mar 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky.
Elizabeth Hays was born on 6 Dec 1789 in Hardin County, Kentucky.
Randall Porter Hays was born on 22 Jan 1794 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He died on 26 Aug 1884. Randall married Sarah Colvin on 26 Dec 1822 in Hardin County, Kentucky.
Mary Hays was born about 1795. She died in 1845.
John Porter Hays was born on 1 Jan 1798 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He died on 16 Jan 1868 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He was buried in Hays Cemetery, Hardin County, Kentucky. John married Evaline Dorsey on 8 Jan 1833 in Hardin County, Kentucky.
Susan Hays was born on 13 Aug 1801. She died on 25 Feb 1871.
Sarah J Hays was born on 3 Mar 1804. She died on 3 Jul 1865.
