John Hays was born in 1760 in Allen Twp., Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of William Hays and Ann "Nancy" Hoge. He married twice, first to Mary Ragen who gave birth to 10 children:

His second wife was Rachel Black whom he married July 2, 1815, in Warren County, Ohio.
"On Tuesday last in this vicinity, John Hays, aged 70. His remains were interred in the Methodist burying ground with Masonic honors", reported 5 Feb 1825 in The Western Star, Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio.[1]
John left a diary, a rather remarkable document which has been transcribed and included in a book on the Hays line. The diary lists his wives and children and his adventures from about 1778 to 1819. The book contains John's paternal line back to County Donegal in Ireland.[2]
