Biography

Frances R "Fanny", born 2 Sep 1867, was the only daughter and sixth child of President Rutherford B. and Lucy (Webb) Hayes. Her early years were spent at Columbus, Ohio while her father was serving as governor of Ohio. She attended school in Fremont, Ohio when her family was living at Spiegel Grove, the family home. After her father's presidency, Fanny attended two other boarding schools: Miss Augusta Mittleberger’s boarding school in Cleveland, Ohio and then Miss Sarah Porter’s school at Farmington, Connecticut. According to the records at the Rutherford B. Hayes library, Fanny became her father's constant companion after her mother died in 1889 and shared many of his interests. She married Ensign Harry Eaton Smith, a United States Naval Officer, 1 Sep 1897 at at Spiegel Grove, Sandusky, Ohio. Fanny and Harry had but one child: Dalton Hayes Smith, who was born at Spiegel Grove on June 22, 1898. Fanny lived in Annapolis or in the Washington, D. C. area until after World War I when she was granted a divorce from her husband in 1919. After her divorce, she lived in New York City, she traveled throughout Europe, and spent time in South Africa with her son. Fanny died on March 19, 1950 in Lewiston, Maine and is buried in the family plot at Oakwood Cemetery in Fremont, Ohio.
