Biography

Melvina Elizabeth (“Millie”) Hayes is born on April 23, 1856, in Buffalo, New York, USA [8]. Her parents are Edward Hayes (c1825-?) who was born in England and Arabella Hayes (c1838-?) who was born in Canada. The family can be found in the 1880 census records, living in Evans, New York [1]. Evans is just to the west of Buffalo.

In 1890, Melvina marries John Benjamin Nix (1862-1911) [8]. Melvina and John have five children:

• Frank Benjamin Nix 1890-1973 + (1911) Ethel Scoville 1892-1960

• Mabelle Ellen Nix 1892-1936 + (1917) Ira Newman 1895-1969

• Charles Melvile Nix 1894-1968 + (1) (1916) Margaret Lucille Scott c1893-? + (2) (1920) Marie Julianne Potier 1897-1942

• Edith Nix 1896-1898

• Eda M. Nix 1900-1968 + Clarence E/ Storm 1891-1960

For a while after their marriage they lived in Pennsylvania -- their first two children are born there. But by the time of the 1900 census, they are back in New York State living on a dairy farm in Lyndon Township [2]. Lyndon is where John Benjamin had grown up. They can be found living on this farm in the 1905 New York census [3], and the 1910 federal census [4].

John dies on January 12, 1911 in Ischua, Cattaraugus County, New York. He is buried in the Mount Prospect Cemetery in Franklinville, New York.

Melvina continues to run the farm after his death with the help of her daughter and son-in-law (Mabelle Ellen Nix and Ira L. Newman). In the 1920 census record [5], she is shown as a farmer in Lyndon. She has her daughter (Mabelle) and son-in-law (Ira) and one other son (Charles) living with her. In the 1930 census, Melvina is now 73-years old and Ira and Mabelle have taken over the farm [6]. She is still on the farm with Ira in the 1940 census records [7]. Her daughter, Mabelle, died in 1936 and Ira is living with his second wife (Edith Milne).

Melvina dies on June 1, 1944 in Ischua and is buried with John [8].
