Biography

Harry Chester Hayes, the son of William B. and Wilhelmina Hayes, was born at Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, on 22 Sept 1878. The family lived at 5 Eutaw Pl., Boston. William b. Hayes, born in "Wolfboro" (Wolfeboro), New Hampshire, worked as a teamster. Wilhelmina was born in Sweden.[1]

On 15 Jan 1904, Harry C. Hayes, 25, the son of William B. Hayes and Minnie J. Swanson, married Samantha J. Wallace, 22, the daughter of Joseph and Olivia A. Wallace, at Boston. Harry was born in Boston, but Samantha was born in Cape Neddeck, Maine.[2] Harry and Samantha had at least the following children born at Boston:

  • Olivia Minnie Hayes, b. 18 June 1904[3]
  • Adelbert John Hayes, b. 11 Jan 1906[4]
  • Sarah Elizabeth Hayes, b. 15 Jan 1907[5]
  • Harry Chester Hayes, b. 24 Sept 1908[6]
  • Anna Wilhelminia Hayes, b. 10 Aug 1910[7]

When he registered for the World War 1 Draft on 12 Sept 1918, Harry said that he was 39 years old, born on 22 Sept 1878. He lived at 920 Dorchester Ave, Boston. He worked as a teamster for American Railway Co. at 43 Franklin St., Boston. His nearest relative was his wife, Samantha J. Hayes, of the same home address. Harry was short and slender, with blue eyes and dark brown hair.[8]

In 1930, Harry C. Hayes, 52 b. Massachusetts, lived in Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts, with his mother, Minnie J. Hayes, 76 b. Sweden, and his son H. Chester Hayes, 21 b. Massachusetts. Both Harry and H. Chester say their parents were born in New Hampshire. They lived in the same souse with Edward Brouillet, a 40 year old widower, and his family. Harry worked as a laborer in the yard of a celluloid shop. H. Chester was a crater in a carriage shop. Edward Brouillet was a foreman in a celluloid ship.[9]

Harry Hayes, died on 22 Feb 1965 in Massachusetts. He is buried at the Evergreen Cemetery, Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts: Plot: Section 17 Lot 369.[10] His last place of residence, for Social Security purposes, was Worcester County, Massachusetts.[11]
