Biography

Aaron Hays/Hayes married five times. He married his first wife Nancy Cooper Dec. 15 1836 (there is some conflict about the exact date), in Jackson Co.Ga. He married Margaret Wofford Wallis about 1844 in Jackson Co. Both these two wives died in or because of childbirth, leaving him with several small children in the midst of the civil war.

Trying to farm, make shingles, care for children and he was a HomeGuard for the CSA. Hundreds of bleeding, broken survivors were arriving daily from the war to be cared for by the few able citizens left in Jackson County.

Aaron, obviously feeling an urgent need for a wife, hurried to Hall County and married the Cherokee Rebecca Grubbs on Sept. 1 1864 as Sherman was invading and burning Atlanta.

Rebecca Grubbs, daughter of Thomas and Ann Grubbs, who had moved to Jackson Co. from a small Cherokee settlement in S.C., was a Civil War widow herself; widow of Elihu Phillips, with three children and no income.

Aaron's & Rebecca's was a marriage of convenience for both, and the marriage didn't last. . In a few months Aaron filed for divorce, leaving Rebecca pregnant with Thomas Bluford Hayes. Circuit judges didn't come around often, and it took years for Aaron to get a divorce, which was granted Aug 1869, and Aaron immediately married his fourth wife Sept.1869, Rebecca Skelton. There were no children of that marriage.

He married his fifth wife Jan 8 1882, Mary Jane Carlyle, and although he was about 70, there are children of that marriage

It is VERY IMPORTANT FOR ALL GENEALOGISTS TO KNOW THAT THE REBECCA NAMED AS AARON'S WIFE ON JACKSON COUNTY 1870 AND 1880 CENSUS WAS REBECCA SKELTON. NOT MY ANCESTOR REBECCA GRUBBS. (whom Aaron stayed with only a few months in 1864,and left her pregnant with Thomas Bluford Hayes). Rebecca Grubbs is NOT SHOWN on any census with Aaron.

Obituary in Jackson Co. Herald July 20,1894 stating Aaron Hayes died at 101 years old is APPARENTLY MR. HUNNICUT'S JOKE...Actually, . Aaron was probably 82 -84.
