Burial: Haynes Cemetery #1, Askin, Ohio County, Kentucky

John Barton Haynes, the son of William Haynes, Jr. and 1/w Hannah Ellis, was born May 10, 1782 in Amherst County, Virginia. His father moved his family to Mercer County, Kentucky after the Revolutionary War. That is where John met and married Rhoda A. Huff, the daughter of William Huff and Mary B. Hungate. They were both 21 years old at the time. They were the parents of 13 children, the oldest 3 of 4 were born in Mercer County. The other children, who were born after 1810, were born in Ohio County, Kentucky, where John owned property worth $1500 at the time of the 1850 census of Ohio County.

According to Haynes researcher, Mary Russelberg Haynes, John Barton Haynes requested that he be buried under a concrete slab because he was afraid that bears might try to dig him up. The story told her by his great, great, great grandson was that John was on his way to the grist mill with a sack of corn when a bear treed him and wouldn't leave until a neighbor later discovered them and scared the bear away.
