William was born in 1740. He passed away in 1827. [1]

Military Service

William served as a Private in the 11th Va. Regiment under Col. Daniel Morgan and Lt. Col. Christian Febiger. Known as "Morgan's Rifles", the Regiment was part of the Virginia Line. On 11 May, 1777 the unit was assigned to the 3rd Brigade of the regular army, seeing action at the Battle of Brandywine, the Battle of Germantown, and the Battle of Monmouth. The unit was reorganized into the 7th Va. Regiment in 1778, and sent to the Southern Division. The unit was captured at the siege of Charleston, 12 May 1780 and disbanded 1, Jan, 1781. More research is needed to find where William served individually. [2]

William Haynes, Jr., the 2nd of the 8 known children of William Haynes, Sr. and Elizabeth Milner of Bedford County, Virginia, was born August 4, 1740 in Amherst County, Virginia. After the Revolutionary War the William Haynes, Jr. family moved to Kentucky stopping briefly in Mercer County after 1800 before moving to Ohio County before 1810.

William Haynes, Jr. married 1st wife Hannah Ellis, the daughter of Charles Ellis and Susannah Harding, on November 26, 1764 in Lexington Parish, Amherst County, Virginia. They were the parents of the following ten known children born in Amherst County: Thomas Harding - b. 15 Jan 1765 Charles Ellis - b. 15 Jan 1765 William (III) - b. 26 May 1767 Jesse - b. 13 Sep 1768 Susannah - b. 27 Feb 1770 - d. MO Elizabeth - b. 04 Apr 1771 Josiah B. - b. 20 Aug 1772 Sarah - b. 13 Mar 1774 Hannah Ellis - b. 21 Oct 1779 John Barton - b. 10 May 1782

At the age of 53 William Haynes married 2nd wife Sarah Tully on December 13, 1793 in Amherst County. She was almost 46 years old at the time of their marriage. They had no issue. They lived in Ohio County, Kentucky the rest of their years. Her date of death is unnown. William died there at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 30 days, just 1 day short of his 87th birthday. He is probably buried in one of the Haynes Cemeteries in a grave originally marked with a fieldstone, It is possibly the cemetery where his youngest son, John Barton Haynes, is buried.

VPB Note: This information from susan carlisle-branam (#47079137) on October 24, 2010 --- William Haynes was in or near Mercer KY before 1800. His daughter Hannah Ellis Haynes married Samuel D. Thomasson there on 16 Feb 1796.
