Biography

Hannah Hazen was born Feb 5, 1709-10 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. She was daughter of Richard Hazen and Mary Peabody. [1] The surname is sometimes spelled Hazzen.

James Osgood and Hannah Hazzen married Feb 9, 1731 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts. [2]

Hannah's husband James started the first public house in Concord, New Hampshire. When James Osgood died, Hannah succeeded him in running the tavern until about 1798. "History has given to her firesides a convivial, as well as colonial, reputation." [3]

Mrs. Hannah Osgood was bequeathed by the Jan 24, 1757 will of her husband [4]

  • .... my Negro woman Servant named Lucy, also the two youngest children she now has....."

The wording of " two youngest children she now has" may imply Lucy had other children who were sold and no longer living with her.

Mr. James Osgood died soon after writing his will. The will was proven on May 25, 1757. Mrs. Osgood probably took ownership of Lucy and the two children in May 1757.

Hannah Hazen Osgood is buried at Old North Cemetery in Concord. [5] The last digit of the death date is unreadable on the tombstone. Her will was written on May 28, 1783 so her death was between 1783-1789.
