On Friday, November 28, 1997 9:35 AM, vanstory wrote: I have a question regarding Thomas Hearne' will. I have only an abstractt; copy of the will so I may be missing inportant information. He names sons ; George, Ebenezer, Thomas, and John, Daughters Jemima, Mary , Sarah, Ann,; Ester, grandsons Elisha, William and Joshua sons of his son Nehemiah. James Hearne son of william Hearne is not called a grandson nor is; William called a son. Is there some other proof that he had a son named; William? Is the abstract misleeding? I thought it odd that all the other males were called sons but William was not.
Margaret:
A full transcript of Thomas Hearne' fill follows. This, at least, gives you the full benefit of the wording of the original will in the Maryland archives.

But the will, in itself, does not answer your question. One researcher concluded that James was the son of Thomas; brother, William (since brothers William and Thomas jointly purchased the tract Stains).
A Somerset Sampler; however, reaches the conclusion that William was, indeed, the son of Thomas -- based upon correlating information from other records. Quoted in part:
William Hearne (Hearn, Hern) (before 1727-1754), tanner and carpenter, son of Thomas and Sarah (Newbold) Hearne, was listed in his fathers household in 1743 tax list for Wicomico Hundred, Somerset Co., and was mentioned in his fathers will (1762): ;Also I give and bequeath to James Hearne the son of William Hearne one hundred and ffifty Acres of Land taken out of a Tract of Land Called Stains; William Hearne was named with;Brothers and Sisters to the Deceased; in an account, estate of his brother, John Hearne (d. 1765) (even though William pre-deceased him). Inventory of estate of William Hearne Jr was taken on 17 Apr 1754 by Robert Twilley and William Vennables and witnessed by brothers George and Thomas Hearne, jr., and George Parker;

William Hearne, the merchant, died Oct, 1691, and was buried on an elevated spot on his farm, that became a family burying ground, and has been nicely kept and preserved to the present time, 1907. His wife, Mary, and sons, Thomas and Nehemiah, with many otber descendants, are buried there.[1] In 1897 I had erected on a firm foundation a modest granite monument, the cut of which is shown on opposite page, with the inscription "HEARNE" at the base[2], and on the face: William Hearne, merchant, born 1627, and wife, Mary, born in London, England. Settled here in 1688. He died October, 1691. and she died after him. "Thomas Hearne, son of William and Mary, born May 31, 1691 ; died March, 1762. His wife, Sally Wingate, died before him."
Thomas, son of William and Mary Hearne, was born May 3, 1691, and died about March 1, 1762. He lived in Somerset county, Maryland. He married Sally Wingate. Children: George, born about 1715; Ebenezer, born May 6, 1717, died in April, 1785, married Priscilla Fooks; Thomas (2), of whom further; Elizabeth, married Isaac Moore; John; Nehemiah, died in March, 1760, married Bettie ---; Jemima; Mary, married Joshua Morgan; Esther, married Benjamin Vincent; Sarah; Anne; William.
