Biography

Marguerite was born around 1652 in Port-Royal. She was the daughter of Étienne Hébert and Marie Gaudet.[1]

Marguerite (18) married Jacques Le Prince (24) (born about 1646 in Normandie, France; son of Nicolas Leprince and Judith Hurault) in 1671 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France. Their known children were:

  1. Anne Le Prince (abt. 1678–abt. 1755) .
  2. Antoine Le Prince (abt. 1680–1732) .
  3. Francois Le Prince (abt. 1680–bef. 1751) .
  4. Marguerite Le Prince (abt. 1681–aft. 1734) .
  5. Étienne Le Prince (abt. 1688– ) .
  6. Jean Le Prince (abt. 1692–bef. 1752)

The young bride was listed in the 1671 census of Port-Royal at age 19, in her widowed mother’s household, but Marguerite’s husband’s name was not mentioned.[2]

The family settled in Port-Royal as shown in the census of 1678.[3]

In 1686, at Port Royal, Marguerite HEBERT, aged 35, was living with her husband, Jacques LEPRINCE [recte Le Prince], aged 40, and their four children. They owned 5 sheep and 4 hogs.[4].

Between about 1678 and 1692, they had six known children[5]:

  1. Anne Leprince ca 1678-
  2. Francois Leprince (twin) ca 1680-1751
  3. Antoine Leprince (twin) ca 1680-1732/
  4. Marguerite Leprince ca 1681-
  5. Etienne Leprince ca 1688-
  6. Jean Leprince ca 1692-1752/

Jacques died before 1692 because, in 1693 at Les Mines, Marguerite was widowed, 40 years of age, and living with her five children. The eldest was Marguerite at age 15, and the youngest was Françoise, only 1 year old.[6]

Marguerite died after 1715 in Pisiguit according to her descendants’ depositions at Belle-Isle-en-Mer, and before 1734 because she was declared as deceased at the time of her daughter Marguerite’s marriage.[7]

Normally, I would update the profiles of children listed in the census. In the 1686 census at Port Royal it just says 4 children. Since it is easy to see or figure out who the 4 children are, is it ok to update their profiles also?

Yes it's OK. You might say something like she is one of the four children given on the 1686 census record.

Thank you for your thoroughness. Cindy

Would Tommy Prince (The native war hero from Manitoba) be a descendant?
posted by Dougie Walsh
No, Tommy Prince the war hero is not related to (us) the Acadian Princes. His family was given the "surname" by the government because his grandfather was a kind of leader ( chief?) aboriginal "royalty".
