Biography

Rufas Jagalong Hedrick was born on July 4, 1809 in Crocket, Wythe County, Virginia. His parent were Jacob and Susannah Smith Hedrick. On March 20, 1832 Rufas married Virginia Jane Wilson in Wythe County, Virginia, Their children were Susan born on November 19, 1834, Joseph born October 25, 1836, Elizabeth born in the year of 1840,Sarah Janeborn about 1842, James born about 1844, Ellas born on April 19, 1845, George born about abt 1848, Joanna born on May 15, 1849, During the 1850 census the family was living in District 68, of Wythe County, Virginia. Rufas was providing for the family by farming with his farm valued at $2000. He had attained the age of 41 years, Jane was listed as being 37 years of age. Their children listed were Susan age 15 years, Joseph 13 years, Elizabeth 10 years, Sarah 8 years, James 6 years, Elias 4 years, George 2 years and Joannah 1 year of age. Martha was born in the year of 1850, Rufas Morgan born on February 12, 1853 and Margaret born during April of 1856. On July 8, Rufas became a widower as his wife Virginia passed away. On October 22, 1859 in Wythe County, Virginia. In 1860 Rufas was listed as a Laborer at the age of 50 years, Lucritia was listed as being 35 years of age, there were four children living at home with their father , James age 17, George age 13 Joanah age 11 and Rufas age 7 years. During the 1870 census Rufas was reported as being 60 years of age and farming to provide for the family.Lucretia was reported to be 44 year of age and Rufas M. was 15 years old.

Rufas took for his second wife Lucretia Heldrith. In about the year of 1871 The marriage lasted for about a year since his wife Lucretia passed away In Wythe County of Virginia on June 10, 1872 Rufas wed for the third time to a widower Jane Elizabeth Zimmerman Harkenrader. Rufus's fourth marriage was to Mary Jane Winn Morris on June 5, 1876 in Wythe County. On June 21, 1880 his age was reported as being 70 years of age and the head of the family living on the farm. Living with him on the farm was his wife Mary Jane and his son Rufus Morgan and wife Mary Jane and their two children.

Rufus Jagalong Hedrick died on February 1, 1892 at Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia.
