"Mrs. Charles Hofer Of Henry, Dies
_
Like a weary child who, after a day of strenuous activity, pillows its head in the bosom of its mother and falls into a restful sleep, so also was the passing of a dear old mother in Israe, who had served her God faithfully and well through a period of over four-score years, and entered into rest eternal.
Laura Rosina Heinrich, daughter of Charles and Mary Heinrich, was born in Henry, Marshall Co., Illinois, United States, December 28, 1860, her parents then living in a home where the Henry Theatre now stands. She received her religious and secular education in the old St. Mary's school, which has since given place to the present, more modern building.
Her marriage to Charles Hofer was solemnized in St. Mary's Church, April 10, 1894, the resident pastor, Rev. Fr. Baak, officiating. They began their married life on a farm in Whitefield Township, when after four years, they moved to Henry, purchasing and occupying their commodious home on Second Street, where, in 1939, the husband and father passed on, and, some five years later the wife and mother.
Mr. and Mrs. Hofer were the parents of three children, Louis, residing on a farm north of Henry; Irene Kaliher, who with her family resides in the parental home, and Charles Hofer of Peoria. There are also 12 grandchildren, one of whom is deceased. One of the grandsons, Leland Hofer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hofer, is serving with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. A brother, William Heinrich of this city, is the sole survivor of the Heinrich family of eight children.
Mrs. Hofer's final illness was brief, she sustained a stroke Monday evening of last week, from which she failed to rally, and on the following Saturday, June 3 1944, passed away as she had lived, peacefully and quietly, at the advanced age of 83 years, five months, and five days.
The deceased was a loyal and practical member of St. Mary's Church and Rosary Society, a kind and helpful neighbour, one of the best of mothers, and her children will call her blessed.
Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Church Tuesday morning at 9:30 o'clock with the Rev. Fr. Andrew Schauer chanting the high mass of requiem, and paying a fitting tribute to one of St. Mary's venerable and most faithful members. Burial was held in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, with her three grandchildren, Donald and Eugene Kaliher, and Harold Hofer, and three grand-nephews, Donald Heinrich, Elmer Klein, and Gordon Ries serving as casket bearers. The Brennan funeral service was in charge of all arrangements.
Farewell, dear mother, until we meet you in that Home where there is no parting. May you rest in peace.
Those attending the serve from out-of-town were: Mrs. Joe Pelikan, Mrs. Roy Risberg, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Evers, Mrs. Fred Van Sickle, and Mrs. Lena Schafroth, of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Val Hofer, Mrs. John Kitlan, Mrs. Nellie White, Mrs. E. F. Brutcher, Miss Edna Hofer, Mrs. John Burkhardt, Mrs. Glen Reisinger, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Grawey of Peoria; and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ball of Bradford."
"Stern ol' gal. I don't ever remember sitting on her lap." - Lee Hofer
From Sacramental Records of St. Mary's & St. Joseph's Churches in Henry, Illinois:
"30 Martii: Rosinam filiam Caroli Henderick et Mariae Bisler nat. 28 Decemb. 1861 suscepit Nicolaus Corn Maria Bisler
Aloysius Lightner D.D."
