Biography

Birth: According to entries from previous Wikitree contributors, Mary Elizabeth Helm was born in 1750 in Frederick, Virginia. She married John Followell and they had 12 children together. She died in May 1802 in Washington, Kentucky, at the age of 52. See comment below.

Migration in 1782: In 1782 John Followell migrated with his family to today's central Kentucky. He was married to a sister of Marquis Helm. John and his wife had four children, including Marquis Followell.[1]

Death of husband, 1783: Marquis Followell said his father John died in July 1783.[2]

Elizabeth's remarriage, 1792: Elizabeth Followill and Squire Baker married in Lincoln County, Kentucky on 24 Jan 1792. John Bentley was a bondsman for the marriage.[3]

Taxpayer in 1797: Elizabeth was in Washington County, Kentucky. Named as Elizabeth Followill, she was taxed for two white males between 16 and 21.[4] These were probably her younger sons Abraham and William Followell. The previous page of the tax record has sons John and Marcus Followill, who were over 21 and taxed in their own names. Comment: The tax assessor probably used Elizabeth's first married name of Followill just because she was the only surviving parent of Abraham and William, otherwise she would have been Elizabeth Baker.

Research Note: Elizabeth's surname was Followill or Followell when she remarried in 1792. An additional indirect piece of evidence shows that she was the widow of John Followell. The John Bentley who was the bondsman for her marriage was also a witness for Elizabeth's son Marquis Followell in his 1807 lawsuit. Bentley testified that he had raised corn with John Followell in 1775.[5] Marquis Helm's testimony that his sister was married to John Followell establishes Elizabeth's maiden surname as Helm.

The first name of Elizabeth appeared in two records, her remarriage in 1792 and a tax record of 1797. I have not found the name Mary in any primary record. Samples-1044 04:55, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Helm-1205 and Helm-353 appear to represent the same person because: The names of the husband and wife, Followell-36 and Helm-1205, agree with the names for Followell-1 and Helm-353. The profile of Helm-1205 does not contain any additional relatives, information, or sources. I think the best choice would be to merge.

This profile is a merge of Helm-353, 406, and 2384. Their birth, first marriage, and death data were sourced to two Ancestry family trees and three genealogy finding tools. The family trees are no longer accessible but are shown in the sources section. The three finding tools were Ancestry's "International Marriage Records, 1560-1900", the American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI), and the Family Data Collection (FDC). I could not find any Followell-Helm marriage in the International Marriage Records database. The AGBI had information for an Elizabeth Helm and Elizabeth Followell in Pennsylvania, but not Frederick County, Virginia. As for the FDC, it is not currently available at Ancestry.com or FamilySearch. A Wikitree guidance page for FDC recommends using it as a finding tool, not as a Wikitree source. See [1]. This profile's birth, marriage, and death data for Elizabeth Helm are plausible, but a primary source for that information would be helpful.

Folowell-1 and Helm-406 appear to represent the same person because: Hi! I'm a descendant of Mary Elizabeth Helms/Followell. I'd like permission to merge with Elizabeth Followell--as she's the same person. I have 1750 as birthdate, but acknowledge that it should be 1746. Thanks, Rita Drescher
