Notes

Note N68OBITUARY:Death of a Most Worthy Man.A. Hemingway, one of the old and ever respected settlers of the town of Jefferson, died at his home in that town,Tuesday evening, March 13th, 1894, at the age of 74 years, three months and 18 days. The deceased was born in the township of Whitby, Ontario, Dec. 25th, 1819. In 1844 he emigrated to Wisconsin traveling the whole distance by team as did many of the hardy pioneers of that day. He first settled west of the city of Watertown, but did not long remain there. In 1847 he purchased the farm in the western part of Jefferson on which he has lived continuously, except a few years spent in Jefferson, up to the day of his death. He married four times; first to Miss Eleanor Harris, next to a sister of the deceased wife, Miss Harriet Harris; third to Miss Lavina Fleming; and lastly to Mrs. Helen Knapp, also deceased. Each wife brought him children, and in all these varied domestic relations he proved a steadfast devoted husband and father.Mr. Hemingway was a man of broad and liberal thought on all social, religious or political questions. Although born under a foreign government, he was a true and intense American, and believed in and supported American institutions with a fervor and steadfastness that might be taken as an example even by the native born. His integrity of character was ever unquestioned, and he carried a heart always in sympathy with the sufferings and necessities of his fellow men. Thus lived and died another of the staunch men who helped lay the foundation of the civilization enjoyed by the present generation. Peace to his ashes.
