Note N54RESPECTED PIONEER LADY PASSES ON AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Rilla Hemingway, youngest daughter of Elizabeth Lawrence and Josiah Hemingway, was born the 12th of November, 1856, at Rosendale, Wis., being the youngest of a family of 13 children. She passed away at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. G. J. Gerretson, on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 1946.
As a young child she came with her family in a covered wagon to Minnesota and spent the greater part of her life in this vicinity. She married N. A. Crittenden in 1874 and to this union two children were born, Mrs. Maude Gerretson of this city and Harley C. Crittenden, who preceded her in death.
In 1892 (incorrect date?) she was united in marriage to W. H. Lansing, who passed away a few years ago.
She leaves to mourn her passing Dr and Mrs. Gerretson, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Matthews of Pasadena, Cal., and Mr. and Mrs. Harley Crittenden of Chicago, the latter a grandson of Mrs. Lansing.
She had been a member of the Methodist church for over 50 years, was a charter member of Faith Rebekah lodge, honorary member of the Friday Study club and took active part in other civic activities.
Funeral Services will be conducted Friday at 2:30 at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Gerretson, with Rev. G. H. Rogers officiating and 'burial' in Maple Grove Cemetery. Bearers are N. H. Hempsted, Burt Sorenson, Allan Roth, George McPeak, O. A. Ericksen and H. M. Robinson. Mortician D. N. Dibble has charge of the funeral arrangements.
Notes from Shirley Hemingway: Newell Crittenden was Rilla's 1st husband and was born in 1847 (9 years older than Rilla) I am not sure what happened to him...did he die or were they divorced? (UPDATE: They were obviously divorced as Newell went on to remarry & have 2 more children....see Newell Crittenden entry.) Rilla's 2nd husband William Lansing was previously married to Jane Wood who died in 1890. (They had one son, George Wendell Lansing.) The "Mrs. Clarence Matthews" listed in the obit. as one of the mourners is actually Ethelyn Crittenden...Rilla's daughter-in-law and mother of Harley Crittenden Jr.
