Note N38FINALLY RELIEVED OF HIS TERRIBLE SUFFERING
Calvin, third son of Josiah and Elizabeth Hemingway, was born at Montreal, Canada, April 20th, 1837, and died at Kasson, Minn., Dec. 23rd, 1917, at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 3 days. In 1844 he removed with his parents to Wisconsin, where he grew to manhood. In 1860 he was united in marriage to Kathryn Holiday. In 1865 they came to Minnesota, locating on a farm in Steele county. In 1872 they came to Kasson, which has since been their permanent home except the time he spent on his farm two and a half miles southwest of Kasson. Mr. Hemingway is preceded in death by his wife and three children: Ellsworth, who died in infancy; Anna, at the age of thirteen, and Porter, at the age of forty. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. F. O. Kimball, of Plainview, Texas; a son, Elmer Hemingway, of this village; ten grand children, four sisters and two brothers to mourn his loss.
He was a sufferer from neuralgia for years and often expressed a desire to have the end come that he might thus be relieved of his pain. This was the cause of his death.
The funeral services were held at the late home of deceased at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Rev. R. J. Rice officiating. The bearers were Messrs. N. South, M.G. Smith, E. G. Chase and W. M. Compton, and Undertaker F. Augustine had charge of the remains, which were laid to rest in Maple Grove cemetery.
Relatives from out of town here to attend the funeral were George and Merritt Hemingway, of Waseca; Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Hemingway and H. W. Stout, of Owatonna; Wm. Roebuck, of Marshall. and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Dibble of Austin.
Note from Shirley Hemingway: Calvin had his leg amputated below his thigh. The family story is that it was the result of a pitchfork accident and his leg was amputated on the kitchen table...supposedly the 1st amputation done by the Mayo Bros. (This is not documented.) The date of his birth is questionable as it is sometimes shown as April 21st,1838. His wife's name is also spelled "Catherine".
