Susan was born in 1829 at Palmyra, Wayne, New York. She was the daughter of Truman Heminway and Mary Aldrich Heminway.
She married Nathan Oaks in October 1848. They had about seven children together.

She passed away in 1904 at Oaks Corners, Ontario, New York. She was buried at the Resthaven Cemetery in Phelps, Ontario, New York.
