Popko, also known as Peter, was born in 1832 in Groningen, Netherlands. He was the son of Johan Henckel and Anna van der Molen. Around the year 1862, Popko gained British citizenship, and in the year 1868 Popko became a sailor. 14 years later he became the captain of a merchant ship that sailed from the RIver Tyne to the Mediterranean Sea. During this time he was known as "The Flying Dutchman". In 1874 Popko married Sarah Mary Knill. Near the end of his life, Popko was known to have sent a registration form to The Grand Lodge of Scotland. He died on May 8, 1913 in North Shields, Northumberland, England.
