WARNING - PLEASE DO NOT CONFUSE WITH Richard Handy

Biography

Richard Hendee Sr. (b. 1611) Is the first recorded member of this family in the USA. He may have brought his son, Richard (b. 1630) with him when the son was 7 or 9 years old. Nothing is known of this Richard's mother (wife of Richard b. 1611). She may have died previously in England. This has contributed to a great amount of confusion with Hendee researchers making posts showing Hannah (Elderkin) Hendee as wife of both Richard Hendee (b. 1611) and Richard Hendee (b. 1630).

This Richard was born approx. 1630 in England. There have been letters reviewed among his descendants, That this family came from the Huguenots or Protestants in the Normandy area of France and migrated to England, while fleeing persecution.

Richard Hendee b. 1630 d. 1670 [1]

He had two sons, [Ensign] Richard and Caleb. The latter died without children; the former married and had a son Jonathan; his wife soon after died. He left the child with its mother's relatives, moved to Connecticut, there married a Conant [Elizabeth] and settled in or near Windham." [2]

”The names of Hendy, Comstock, Gaylord and Fales were connected by marriage with that of Elderkin.” [3]

Richard Hendy [b. 1630]; Occupation: Doctor [not carpenter like his father]; Spouse: Hannah Elderkin; Marriage: 1661[4]

The date of death of the husband of Hannah (Elderkin) Hendee was 1670 as supported by the following quote showing Hannah as Richard's widow ("relict") as of 1670. ". . . with a more full confirmation of all those lands formerly sold by John Elderkin and Hannah Hendy Relict of Richard Hendee deceace(sp) . . . the thirteenth of October one thousand six hundred seventy” [5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:

According to my husband's family history - the spelling is Handy. This is my husband's 8th great grandfather, and I have not found any spelling the way you have it on here. Where did you get this information? I would like to figure out how it was spelled that way and when. Family today have it as Handy. I have him as follows -

Richard Handy - b. Aug 1645 Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, d. 25 May 1719 Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts.

Hi all, I lead a Hendy ONS here on WikiTree which includes the Hendee spelling. The only Richard Hendy (including Hendee) baptised in England at this time (at least on record) was baptised 25 Oct 1629 in Brook, Hampshire. This is in fact a small village on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England. Could this be the same person? A transcript can be found here. If it is, we will need to merge Richard Hendy into this one, but as his LNAB was clearly spelled Hendy we would also have to change that. What do you all think? Susie

The first Richard Hendee who came to Connecticut would likely have been the one who was born in England in 1611. We have references to his being a ship's carpenter and building ships in New Haven, Connecticut where John Elderkin (father of this Richard's possible wife, Hannah) did the same. The Richard Hendee born in 1631 could still have been born in England, bought land in Connecticut in 1660, married Hannah Elderkin in 1661, had 4 children with her and died in 1670. However, if this Richard came to New England around 1637 (which seems possible if the Hendee's and Elderkins came from England together), he would only have been about 6 years old - not old enough to be "a ship’s carpenter." This would be cleared up if Richard born 1611 and Richard born 1631 were father and son[?]

According to the image of the original handwritten deed at "Hendee Killingworth Deed - 1660s - DeedKillingworthClintonVol2, Pages24-26.pdf," "Hannah Hendy [was the] Relict [widow] of Richard Hendee deceace(sp) . . . the thirteenth of October one thousand six hundred seventy." The Richard Hendee or Hendy who married Hannah Elderkin in 1661 appears to have died in 1670 rather than 1719.

Somehow this merge was forcefully completed to Hendy despite the Message below. this is in error as no proof exists as to the heritage of either Hendee other than the childrens names as Hendee and the controversial marriage of Richard Hendee to Hannah Elderkin.

Hendee-39 and Hendy-43 appear to represent the same person because: please use Hendee as low number

Thank you
