Biography

This was the Nathaniel who lived neighbors to Richard and Edward in Goochland Co. Virginia in the 1740s. He is believed to be brother to them, and to Samuel Henderson of Granville, North Carolina. His wife Patience is believed to have been Patience Harris. Their large family split over the Revolution. Loyalists and possible Loyalists were Tyree, Richard, Archibald, and Sherrod. Patriots were Edward, William, Patience, Wilson, John and James. They would likely have been born between the 1730s and the 1750s.

South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research, Vol. XIV No. 1 Winter 1986 p. 46.

"...Nathaniel Henderson (Sr.) originally from the Hanover-Goochland-Cumberland area of Virginia, he moved to the Camden District, the area that became Lancaster County, c. 1770- 1775, where he died prior to 10 Oct 1782 when his Will (dated 1776) was first proved in Camden District. He had previously lived for many years in Granville Co., NC....See also Lancaster Co., SC, Deed Abstracts, 1787-1811 by Brent H. Holcomb for additional information on this family. The son Sherrod was a Loyalist during the Revolution, according to "Loyalists in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War" by Murtie June Clark. He (Sherrod) was alive in 1802 when he and his wife Elizabeth along with William Marlow and his wife Elizabeth Henderson deeded the land left to Sherrod and his sister Elizabeth by their father, to George Hicklin."

Will of Nathaniel Henderson, Craven Co., SC, signed July 15 1776, probated 1782

In the Name of God Amen. I Nathaniel Henderson of Craven County and Parish of St Martins in the Province of South Carolina.;..do constitute this to be my Last Will and Testament...as for my Body I desire it may be decently buried at the discretion of my Dear Wife and my Executors hereafter named, as to my worldly estate I will and positively order that all my debts be paid---I first give to my beloved wife during the time of her life the houses and plantation and benefit of my lands whereon I dwell, with all the rest of my estate, only a reserve of one shilling sterling to be paid after my decease to my son Richard Nathaniel Edward John Anne Wilson Tyre William Patience Archabel James, being eleven in number.

Then I will and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth and my son Sharod after the decease of my beloved wife all my estate that it hath pleased god to bless me with to be equally divided between my two children Elizabeth and Sherod only if my daughter Elizabeth should marry before it should please god to call me hence then all my lands to belong to my son Sherod and I do also constitute and appoint my daughter Elizabeth and my son Sherod to be my executors of my estate. In witness whereof...15 July 1776. (signed) Nathaniel Henderson Witnesses: Richard I Burnett, Benj. Burnett, A. Burnett

  • NOTES (1)

Known Loyalists: Tyree, Richard, Archibald, and Sherrod. Known Patriots, Edward, William, Patience?, Wilson, John, and James. The Loyalists names were not used by other descendants for their children. By the census, it is suggestive that the Loyalists moved to other counties. Truly a house divided. The Patriots stayed together in Camden and Pendleton Dist. SC
