Matthew Edgar, known as Eddie was the son of Elizabeth Annie Rossiter and Matthew Henderson. His early working life was as a tram conductor in Auckland and later an employee of NZ Rail. Matthew enlisted WWI, serial number 13/2804, rank trooper, embarking with the NZEF -26th Reinforcements, Mounted Rifles. His unit sailed on the troopship 'Moeraki', May 31 1917 to Sydney, and from there on the 'Port Lincoln' to Suez, Eygpt. Postwar, he moved to the Waikato for a time and was working there in 1919 as a motor mechanic at Te Kuiti. It may have been there that he married in 1920 to Miriam Tumohe. They separated.[1] By the late 1920's, Matthew had moved back into the family home in Auckland and was employed as a mechanic and later a fitter. He retired around 1949. Matthew E Henderson died in 1963 age 76 at the time he was living at Ranfurly War Veterans Home. He was cremated at Purewa Cemetery 4 March 1963.
