Biography

Brigadier General William Henderson served with 1st Brigade, South Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.

William Henderson is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A054848.

William Henderson was born on March 5, 1747/48 in Granville County, North Carolina Colony.

He was the son of Samuel Henderson and Elizabeth Williams.

He died before March 1788.pp65-66.

"Colonel William Henderson Rises to High Military Rank" by Dr. Archibald Henderson in the Charlotte Observer, Sunday July 8, 1928 p. 9. Article says he lived in Tennessee and had family there, died in South Carolina in 1787-88. Wounded in battle of Eutaw Springs, which occurred on 8th September 1781. This William Henderson was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth Williams of Granville County NC. Born March 5, 1748 in Granville County.

In a "History of the Upper Country of South Carolina, Vol. II", p. 38, by John H. Logan, is found the following: “Col. William Henderson settled, a single man on the Pacolet, and lived there with his sister, Mrs. John Beckham.”

He lived for several years with his sister until he constructed his own cabin. He allowed the Beckham’s to settle on his land just off Sandy Run Creek in possibly a cabin that had already been built by “squatters”. In his will, William Henderson gave the land (200 acres) to the Beckhams and his brother, John, an executor of the estate, deeded the land to the daughters of Beckham.

South Carolina Wills and Probate Records 1670-1980 ^[1]

I. William Henderson of South Carolina, St Matthews parish, Orangeburg District, being of sound mind and memory do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following: Item. I give and bequeath to my loving brother John Henderson to him and his heirs forever one thousand acres of land situated on the waters of Pacolate River being the place whereon he now resides he paying eleven shilling and eight pence per acre for the said land and I do acknowledge to have received two hundred and nineteen pounds in part payment of the above mentioned lands.
Item. I give and bequeath a tract or parcel of lands on the Wateree River in Camden District to my beloved daughter Eliza Moriah Henderson and in case she dies not marrying nor have issue then the above parcel or tract of land to return to my beloved wife Letitia Henderson and if she my wife shiuld marry again then to remain hers and her heirs forever.
Item. I give and bequeath a tract of land upon the High Hills of Santee known by the name of Prospect Hill to my beloved wife Letitia Henderson her and her heirs forever which land was puchased from John Fabre and fifty pounds of the money paid as will appear by an order in his favor on Will Sims White Factor.
Item. I give and bequeath to my beloved stepson William Land him and his heirs forever all the property contained in the marriage settlement I made over to my beloved wife Letitia Henderson subject to be called upon by my Executors for an equal proportion of all debts shall be due after all the monies arising from the sales of the lands to be hereafter mentioned.
Item. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Letitia Henderson and my beloved daughter Eliza Moriah Henderson them and their heirs forever all my personal estate to be equally divided between them share and share alike. Item. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife my riding chair and harness and all my household furniture.
Item. It is my further will that a tract or parcel of land in Camden District lying between Broad and Catawba rivers should be sold for the discharge of my just debts.
Lastly I appoint nominate and constitute my brother John Henderson Gen'l Thomas Sumter Capt Douglas Stark and Philip Frieman to be Executors of this my last Will and Testament, and I do hereby revoke all other Will or Wills Testament or Testaments by me heretofore made, acknowledging, ratifying and confirming these presents and none other to be my last Will and Testament.
