Biography

William was born at Shaws Farm, Dalserf, Lanarshire and was baptised there on 20th September 1818. He was the son of James Henderson and Lilias Burns. [1]

In 1841 William was 20 years old. He lived at Shaws farm in the parish of Dalserf with his parents, siblings John, James, Margaret, and Thomas and three servants, Grace Wen, Betsy Stark and John Lindsay. [2]

By 1851, William was 31 and had moved from the family farm at Shaws to his own farm at Craigthornhill, Glassford in the parish of Avondale, Lanarkshire. He was a farmer fo 135 acres and lived there with farm servants, John dow, Margaret Allan, Agnes Scott, David Fallon and Thomas Millar. [3]

On 11th July 1855, William married Anne Semple at Hairshawhead, Avondale. [4] This marriage record note his birth was registered on 20th September 1820 rather than 1818.

Children

By 1861 William had moved from Craigthornhill to Eastquarter, a farm of 100 acres, in the parish of Glassford. He lived there with his wife Anne and children Sarah, Lilias and Ann and servants John Reid, Andrew Wilson, Helen Campbell and Elizabeth Baird. [5]

By 1871 William had again moved his family from Lanarkshire to Meadownay in the parishof Maybole, Ayrshire. It was a farm of 250 acres arable land, employing 2 labourers. William, aged 50 lived there with his wife Anne, children Sarah, Lilias, James, William and Anne and employees, James McCormick, Bella (Mc)Queen and George Murray. [6]

In 1881 William was 60 years old. He continued to farm at Meadownay, Maybole, employing 2 men, 3 women and 1 boy. he lived there with his wife Anne, children Sarah, Lilias, James, William and Anne, and servants Ellen McDonald and David Gibson. [7]

By 1891 William was 70 years old and again had moved. While retaining ownership of Meadownay, he left it in son James' care and purchased nearby High Milton Farm, where he lived with his wife Anne and servants William campbell, Jane Jess and Isabella Ferguson. [8]

He passed away on 17th August 1893 at High Milton Farm, Maybole.[9]
