Western Australia; Mrs. Richards, Broken Hill;

Peter was apprenticed at 15 to the blacksmith Robin Thompson at Alloa; Mr Robert Drysdale Custings paid a surety of £50. Peter's wage in the first year was 10 shillings for the year, plus board and lodging, and for the following three years, £1 plus board and lodging.
In 1840 Robin Thompson and his partner Hogarth Caust migrated to Australia, on the "Fairfield" and set up a blacksmith business in Magill, SA. Peter accompanied them. He became a friend of (Sir) Henry Ayres.
They went to the Californian goldfields in 1849 on the second vessel to leave for America. They worked in the Bear River district in Sacramento, California. The new sites were hard to acquire, and the cost of living was high. Graham Peters has a receipt for $96 for a hundred pounds of flour from Hawker's Bear, Stockton, in Sacramento, and for $2.50 for a meal. They returned to Sydney in 1852 and from thence to the Bendigo gold fields, where, in January 1852 Peter sunk one of the first mines. After extracting some gold there, he moved to the Pegleg Gully Gold Mine in Echunga, SA, where he found a small amount of gold initially, and then another 2 pounds in one small crevice. From there he moved to Ovens Valley where he found 11 lb of gold in 14 days. He remained in the area for 3 months, and then returned to Adelaide in 1853 where he married Hannah Gibson.
They moved to Allen's Creek near Kapunda and set up a Blacksmith shop which operated there until 1872. Most of the children (7 daughters and 6 sons) were born there. In 1872 the family moved to Stone Hut, towing a stripper harvester behind the wagon to provide extra shelter for overnight camping during the journey, and at their journey's end. Alexander, the youngest, was born in Stone Hut. Peter bought town blocks on the northern end of the township and established the shop and a cueing pen for bullocks. He shod horses, cued bullocks, and built farm implements.
Peter donated the land for the Laura Methodist Church. He also built cottages on some of his blocks, to accommodate the Richards and Webb families.
In 1885, Peter and all the family except the Richards, Webbs and James, moved to Cleve. John (15) and Allan (13) rode on horseback, moving the cattle, while the balance of the family were in a dray. While crossing the gulf at Yorkey's Crossing an axle and wheel collapsed on the dray and as it was a Sunday Peter refused to fix it. The boys refused to stay where they were, so Peter eventually gave in, repaired the dray and continued. The journey took another fortnight.
Peter farmed Lot 52 in the Hundred of Yadnarie until his retirement. Peter died 21 7 1906 at Semaphore, SA and is buried at Cheltenham cemetery.
The gravestone in the Cleve cemetery lists both Hannah and Peter.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
