Biography

Sophronia Henderson was born on April 30, 1809 in Genon, Cayuga, Aurelius, Cayuga, New York, United States.

When she was 14 years old she married Jefferson Bowker, age 18, farmer, on April 21, 1824 in Genon, Cayuga, New York. [1] Together they had at least 13 children:

  2. Amanda Bowker (1827–1908)
  3. Alfred Bowker (1829-1866)
  4. Martha Jane Bowker (1832-1901)
  5. Philinda Bowker (1834-1917)
  6. Madison Bowker (1836–1836)
  7. Jefferson Bowker (1836–1901)
  8. Mary Bowker (1838– )
  9. Roxena Bowker (1840– )
  10. William Henry Bowker (1844–1919)
  11. Sylvester Bowker (1847-1900)
  12. Amaziah Chester Bowker (1849–1940)
  13. Elsie S. Bowker (1855-1875)

In the 1850 census Sophronia (age 41) was living with her husband and 8 children in Locke, Cayuga, New York, United States.[2]

In the 1855 census Sophrona (age 46) was living with her husband and 6 children in Locke, Cayuga, New York, United States.[3] Sadly, Jefferson died in 1857 at the age of 50 years.

In the 1860 census Saphrana (age 51) was widowed and living with 5 children in Locke, Cayuga, New York.[4]

In the 1880 census Saphronia (age 71) was the widowed mother of Anziah Bowker in Sempronius, Cayuga, New York, United States.[5]

Sophronia Bowker died on March 23, 1889 in Charleston Township, Tioga, Pennsylvania, United States at the home of her daughter Martha J Staples. She was buried at Middlebury Union Cemetery in Keeneyville, Tioga, Pennsylvania.[6]

IN MEMORIAM.
The late Mrs. Jefferson Bowker, who died on the 23d ultimo, was born in Genon, Cayuga county, N.Y., where she was married and commenced housekeeping. She and her husband soon moved to Groton, where they lived for many years, and where their large family of children grew up. But death entered their home and the husband and father was taken, then two sons, then two daughters followed to the far off unknown. Mrs. Bowker never remarried. She had been visiting at her daughters, Mrs. C. Trumble and Mrs. Silan Staples, in this county. She died at the latter's house in Charleston. She had lived more than her allotted time, being nearly four score, and her death was peaceful. The funeral was held at Keeneyville, Rev. A. G. Cole officiating.
