Biography

George Henderson was born on 16 May 1839 at the village of Penston in the parish of Gladsmuir in the county of East Lothian in Scotland and baptised on 09 June 1839. [1]

He was the son of James Henderson and Janet Hogg and was named after his maternal grandfather.

In 1841 George was living at Macmerry, East Lothian with his parents and siblings.[2]

In 1851 George was living at North Elphinstone East Lothian with his parents and siblings. He was a coal miner.[3]

At the time of the Scottish census of 07 April 1861, George Henderson was described as aged 21 and unmarried. He was lodging at Argyll Street, Lochgilphead in the civil parish of Glassary in Argyllshire, Scotland. His occupation was Probationary Teacher, FC and his place of birth was given as Gladsmuir, East Lothian. [4]

Research Notes

In the Old Parish Register of Births and Baptisms, George Henderson's mother is recorded as Janet "Gibb", which is presumed to be a mistake for "Hogg".

Note: The conflicting information below has now been resolved but leaving notes for future reference.

The George Henderson who was born in Gladsmuir on 16 May 1839 was working as a probationary teacher in Lochgilphead, Scotland on 07 April 1861. Can this be the same George Henderson whose child May-Jean (Henderson) Head (1861-1913) was born on 21 November that same year in Iowa, USA? It is not impossible, but it seems unlikely. Is there any further evidence to suggest that the George Henderson in Iowa was from Gladsmuir?

The profile of May-Jean (Henderson) Head (1861-1913) states: "When May-Jean Henderson was born on November 22, 1861, in Scott, Iowa, her father, George, was 32, and her mother, Nancy, was 31." George Henderson from Gladsmuir would have been 22, not 32 in 1861, suggesting that two different people have been conflated in this profile.
