Death notice from the ''Timaru Herald:[2]

HENDERSON.—On December 21, 1932, at his residence, Winchester Settlement, John, beloved husband of Georgina Henderson, in his 78th year (suddenly).

OBITUARY[3]

MR John Henderson.
An old Canterbury identity, Mr John Henderson, of Winchester Settlement, died recently. Coming to New Zealand from Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland, Mr Henderson landed at Lyttelton in the early part of 1876. He came to Ashburton shortly afterwards, entering the threshing mill business, which he carried on for nearly 30 years. Mr Henderson in 1905 purchaser the "Ohapi" homestead at Orari. There he successfully farmed until, owing to ill-health, he retired to Timaru in 1916. After about ten years in Timaru he removed to Winchester Settlement, where he lived until his death. Mr Henderson was one of the earliest members of Thistle Lodge, having joined in 1882. He married in 1888 Georgina, eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs G. T. Pearce, of Kaiapoi. Of a retiring disposition, Mr Henderson was highly respected. He leaves a widow, two sons, and three daughters. The sons are Messrs J. L. Henderson (Temuka), C. Henderson (Winchester Settlement), and the daughters are Mrs G. Hampton (Cracroft) and the Misses E. and I. Henderson.

Research Note

DNA evidence links the descendants of John Henderson and Georgina Pearce to the descendants of Mary Ann (Henderson) Hampton, and suggests a reasonably close relationship between them.

Possibility 1
John was possibly the son of John Henderson, although there are inconsistencies: his age at death suggests he was born in 1855 but John Henderson snr did not marry until late 1856 (to Ann McMurray), at which time he was a bachelor. The first recorded child of that couple was born in 1860 and so he could be the child of this couple if he was born about 1857.

James Henderson, son of John and Ann McMurray, named John Henderson of Ashburton, farm labourer, as his sponsor when he emigrated to New Zealand in 1879, suggesting they were closely related.

Possibility 2
His New Zealand death certificate apparently lists his mother as Jane Uren. This could possibly be a first marriage for John Henderson above, or a cousin of the same name and similar age.
