Biography

Edward has always been accepted as the undocumented brother of Charles Henderson of Halifax. This has been strengthened by dna testing, as the YDNA of descendants of Edward are the closest match to the descendants of Charles.

Descendants believe his wife Lydia was the daughter of James Moore.

The earliest Halifax record for Edward Henderson is this one: a conveyance was filed 1782.03.21 and recorded a transfer of two hundred acres from Elizabeth Wilton to Alexander Hitts, both of Halifax County, for a consideration of £500 current money of Virginia. The witnesses were Edward Henderson, Sarah Mais (Mays?), Mourning W. Hitts, and William Mais. The property appears to have been located on "Scurlock (largely illegible name) branch".

This appears to be a gift deed:

On October 10, 1797, Edward bought 15 acres from Nathan Sullins for 200 lbs. On March 17, 1808, he bought 100 acres from Nathan Henderson, a son of his brother Charles Henderson, before Nathan left for Highland Co., Ohio. Edward bought other land at various other times. He served in the Revolutionary War from Halifax County, VA., and applied for a pension.

Edward Henderson appears on the 1785 and 1787 censuses, and also on the 1782 Personal Property Tax List, living next to James Moore, from whom he bought 50 acres in 1786. In 1782 he was probably renting from Moore. Edward Henderson; 1 tithe, 1 horse, 2 cows

HENDERSON, EDWARD S15885 PENSION APPLICATION

Virginia, to wit:

On the 23d day of September, 1832, personally appeared before the Court of Halifax County now sitting Edward Henderson, a resident of the said County and State aforesaid aged Eighty six years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7 1832 that he entered the Service of the United States in the year 1779, being drafted marched from the County of Halifax in the State of Virginia in a Company of Militia which was commanded by Capt Peter Rogers and Lieut Anthony Irby through the State of North Carolina to ?ons in the State of South Carolina where I served a tour of five months I believe in Col Burrell's Regiment but my memory is somewhat impaired and cannot say positively. I was discharged at that place by Capt William Rogers. The whole time of service rendered on this tour including the time allowed to travel home was upwards of six months. My discharge is lost and cannot be found but the service rendered in this tour is proved by John Jones and Caleb Dodson who were soldiers with me at the same time and in the same company. In the year 1781, I was drafted in the County of Halifax in the State of Virginia for six months and was ordered to Richmond, and at that place was attached to Capt Moor's company a very short time. I was then detailed as a waggoner and drove one of the public teams until my term of six months expired. I then enlisted for during the war and still acted as a waggoner for about eight months when I was discharged. I do not recollect the name of the Officer that I enlisted with nor the name of the Officer that discharged me. They were strangers to me at the time, and I have no recollection of them now. My discharge is lost I have not seen it in many years. Do not know a person living that was with me in the service at that time. I can refer to the Rev. David Street, Col. Thomas Davenport, Isaac Moodly Esq and many others who can testify as to my character for veracity and their belief of my Services as a Soldier of the Revolution.

I was born in the County of Cumberland in the State of Virginia, I suppose in the year 1746. I have no record of my age but know that I am Eighty Six years old. I lived in the County of Halifax in the State aforesaid when I entered the Service of the Revolution. I lived in that county for many years after the War ended, then moved to the County of Patrick in the State of Virginia, lived in that county six or seven years then returned to the County of Halifax and live in that county now..

I hereby relinquish every claim whatever to a pension of annuity except the present and declare that my name is not on the Pension Roll of the agency of any State. his Edward X Henderson mark

We David Street a Clergyman residing in the County of Halifax and John Jones residing in said county hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Edward Henderson who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration, that We believe him to be eighty six years of age that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the Revolution and we concur in that opinion. David Street John X Jones
