Biography

Nathan Frank Hendrix was born December 12, 1871 in Fort Scott, Kansas, to James and Jeanette Hendrix.[1,2] The 1880 census[2] shows his family had moved to Elm Springs, Arkansas; Nathan is the oldest of four brothers.[2] If the census information is correct, (see note 14) the family moved around a lot, from Kansas to Texas, back to Kansas, and then to Arkansas. Nathan's father was a farmer.[2]

Nathan, who later went more by his middle name Frank or more often "N Frank", may have married Mamie Julia Moore on November 27, 1902 in Carrington, North Dakota.[3] Mamie had a daughter, Dolores, born May 5, 1905.

In 1918, on July 20, Frank's father died in Utah.[4] Where Frank lived between 1905 (or 1880 if the marriage to Mamie Moore is not correct) is a mystery. But Frank's marriage to Belle Marshall is certain, and it was in Utah.[5] The 1920 census[6] shows Frank, Belle and Belle's daughter Marie Stangle living in Belgrade, Montana, next door to Belle's mother, Sarah Marshall.

In 1928 Frank and Belle moved to Fallon, Nevada, and operated a ranch in partnership with Belle's brother, Walter.[7] The 1930 census shows "N. F." and Belle (shown as "Billie" in the census) on a "general farm" in New River Township, Nevada,[8] (New River Township includes the town of Fallon). In 1933 they moved to the Dudley Petree ranch.[7] Belle died in Fallon on May 14, 1934.[9] Two years later, Frank's mother, who had apparently moved to Nevada to live with Frank, also died and is buried in the same cemetery in Fallen as Belle.[10]

City Directories of 1938, 1939, 1940 and 1942 show that Frank was living in Reno, Nevada during these years.[11]. The 1940 US census of Sparks (adjacent to Reno), shows Nathan Hendrix, age 69, working as an attendant (and not living as an inmate) at the Nevada Hospital for Mental Diseases.[12] Other information in the 1940 census fits with other sources for Frank - born in Kansas, living in Fallon in 1935, and an age of 69. But Frank's marital status in shown as single, which is a mistake. The record of Frank's third marriage[13] shows that Nathan "Allen" Hendrix married Ida Catherina Haberstoh on August 4, 1939 in Livingston, Montana.[see note 14]

Nathan Frank Hendrix died in Reno on September 9, 1944.[1]

14. The marriage record identifies Nathan's parents as James and "Jenet," thus being a clear connection between this Nathan Hendrix and the cited 1880 census. Nathan Frank Hendrix had family connections in the Livingston area, so it's logical he would have gone there to be married; but on the other hand, the groom's middle name on this 1939 marriage license and the "single" status Nathan Hendrix shown in the 1940 census cast doubt that these records are all for the same person. One tie that supports concluding all of these records (the three marriages and all census records above) refer to one and the same Nathan Hendrix is that Jeanette/Janet Holt Hendrix, Belle Marshall Hendrix and Nathan Frank are all buried in the same cemetery in Fallen, Nevada. Additional evidence is contained in Frank's obituary in the Reno Evening Gazette of Sept 11, 1944, which includes: "Surviving is his widow, Mrs. Ida Hendrix of Reno, a stepdaughter, Mrs. Dudley Wilson of Reno, four brothers John M Hendrix of Fallon, D. H. Hendrix of Fresno, H. O. Hendrix of California and J. F. Hendrix of Big Springs. Thus the only thing in doubt in the above bio is the marriage to Mamie Moore in 1902.
