According to his headstone Conrad (Rody) Hendrix was born August 7, 1811[1] in what was then Rowan County, North Carolina. (Became Davie County in 1836.) His parents were Anderson Hendrix[2] and Margaret (Peggy) Myers Hendrix.[3]
On Feb. 18, 1841 Conrad Hendrix married Sarah Garwood[4] the presumed daughter of James and Sarah Frost Garwood.
On June 26, 1841 Conrad Hendrix bought 146 acres of land in Davie County from his father Anderson Hendrix for $500.[5]
Sarah and Conrad had the following children: 1. Amy Hendrix Jan. 5, 1842 - Feb. 16, 1918 (married Zerrell Isaiah Minor)
2. Mary Ann Hendrix Jun. 6, 1843 – Aug. 27, 1883 (married Henry Clay Foster)
3. Nathaniel A. Hendrix Oct. 19, 1844 – Nov. 11, 1898 (married 1. Rebecca Clark 2. Ellen T. Foster 3. Mary J. Garwood.
4. Giles Hendrix Sept. 16, 1845 - Mar. 19, 1919 (married Mary E. Green)
5. Sarah Elizabeth Hendrix Jan. 25, 1848 - Apr. 29, 1912

9. Hannah Hendrix Oct. 26, 1856 - Aug. 27, 1888 (married Hiram Mitchell Foster)
(Some family trees have listed child # 5 Sarah Elizabeth (child of Conrad and Sarah Garwood) as 2 different children, a Sarah and an Elizabeth. When you look closely at the census records you will see that one child is once called Sarah and in another census is referred to as Elizabeth but their age suggests this is the same child. Some have her birth date as 1843 which is on her headstone but the census records showing the order and ages of the kids suggests she was born in 1848) Never the less they were the same child.
In 1850,[6] Conrad and his wife Sarah are living with their children Amy, Mary, Nathaniel, Giles, Sarah and Samuel next door to Conrad’s father Anderson Hendrix and his family. On the 1850 slave census record for Conrad Hendrix there is one female slave age 18.[7]
In 1857 Conrad Hendrix bought 131 acres of land in Davie County from Nathan Hanline.[8]
In the 1860[9]census record Conrad and his wife Sarah are living with their children Amy, Mary Ann, Nathaniel, Giles, Sarah Elizabeth, Samuel, Martha, George, and Hannah in Davie County, North Carolina. In the 1860 slave schedule[10] Conrad has three slaves, one black female age 29 (likely the same one as in the above listed 1850 census slave schedule), one female black slave, age 8, and one black male slave, age 5, likely the children of the female slave.
In the 1870[11] census records Conrad and his wife Sarah are living with their children Amy, Mary Ann, Nathaniel, Giles, Sarah Elizabeth, Samuel, Martha, George, and Hannah in Davie County, North Carolina. Starting in the 1870 census, after the civil war and the Emancipation Proclamation, all freed slaves had to be listed by name in the regular census record. Living next to Conrad Hendrix in the 1870 census are a female black, Ann Hendrix, age 38, keeping house, along with Esther Hendrix, a black female, age 16, a domestic servant, and Allen Hendrix, black male age 14, farm laborer—likely the previous slaves listed above, still with Conrad Hendrix.
On April 2, 1870 Conrad and Sarah Hendrix sell 185 acres of land to their son Nathaniel Hendrix for $700.[12] Nathaniel would have been about 26 years of age.
On October 14, 1871 Conrad Hendrix’ father, Anderson Hendrix, died. Conrad was named administrator of his estate.[13] Conrad received 36 acres from the division of his father’s estate.[14]
On October 8, 1874 Conrad bought 37 acres from his brothers John and Richmond Hendrix for $200, land that they had inherited from the division of Anderson Hendrix’ (their father’s) estate.[15]
In the 1880 census Sarah and Conrad, are still living in Davie County, North Carolina, with only one of their children Sarah Elizabeth,[16] who never married. Their other children were now married and on their own. The freed slaves listed above in the 1870 census are no longer with them.
Conrad was a very active member of Fork Baptist Church, in Davie County as found in the book “A Concise History of Fork Baptist Church.” He is in the records there from 1849 until his death in 1884. For several years he served as a delegate to the Association and assisted in preparing the by-laws of the Church. He also helped with fund raising efforts. His funeral was preached there on May 25, 1884.[17]
Conrad Hendrix died on February 29, 1884 in Davie County, North Carolina at the age of 72.[18]
Although the majority of land was divided among his heirs beginning in 1884, the final settlement took place after the death of his wife Sarah in 1887. The lands of Conrad and Sarah Hendrix were divided among their heirs accordingly:[19]
