Biography

William Edward Hendrix was born to Thomas J. Hendrix and Narcissus Durbin Hendrix in October 1883 in Missouri. He was their oldest child. The family lived in Gasconade County, Missouri for several years before moving to Webster County, Missouri.

William E. Hendrix had a grandmother, Mary Druscilla Crider Hendrix, that lived in Gasconade County, Missouri. She was a Confederate Prisoner of War widow. Her husband, Phillip S. Hendrix, had died in a Confederate Prisoner of War Prison in Illinois. William's other grandparents were Xavier Conrad "Coonrod" Durbin and Malinda Reed Durbin.

Around January 1886, William had a baby sister, Clara Ellen Hendrix.

About 1893, William and Clara had a baby brother born, T. Alfred Hendrix.

William E. Hendrix gained another sister in 1895 by the name of G. Myrtle Hendrix. In 1900 he gained a brother, George G. Hendrix and the last sibling came along in 1903 by the name of Lillian "Lilly" Hendrix.

In the 1900 United States Federal Census, William E. Hendrix was 16 years old living in Bourbois Township, Gasconade County, Missouri. His sister, Clara E. Hendrix, was 14 years old. There was a brother, James A. (Alfred?) who was 8. Willie's sister, Gusti M. (Myrtle?) was 5 years old. He had a baby brother, George B. Hendrix, who was 3 1/2 months old at time of the census.


The 1910 United States Federal Census showed T. J. Hendricks (this is how the spelling was for the Census), and his wife, Narcissus Hendricks living in Washington Township in Webster County, Missouri. William and Clara are no longer living in the household. Clara has married William Robert Tackitt and they have their own family and household. Living in the household of Thomas and Narcissus Durbin are Alfred Hendricks, 17; Myrtle Hendricks, 15; George Hendricks, 10; and Gilla Hendricks, 6. Thomas is listed as a farmer.

William Edward Hendrix was married to Mary Jane Letterman in Webster County, Missouri on December 25, 1907.

In the 1910 United States Federal Census, William E. Hendrix, 26, is married to Mary J. Hendrix, 21. They are living in East Ward, Webster County, Missouri in Marshfield, Missouri. There are no children listed.

On September 4, 1915 in Springfield, Missouri, in Greene County, Missouri, Myrtle Hendrix married Patrick O'Conner. Patrick O'Conner and Myrtle Hendrix O'Conner had two sons. Myrtle was widowed before the 1920 United States Federal Census.

On September 30, 1917, William E. Hendrix's Grandmother Mary Druscilla Crider Hendrix, passed away. She was buried in Gasconade County, Missouri at St. Michael's Cemetery. She was 85 years old and had been widowed for over 50 years.

In the 1920 United States Federal Census, Clara and Robert Tackitt are living in Colorado where Robert is employed with the railroad. After the census, the family moved back to Gasconade County, Missouri where Robert passed on April 25, 1920. Clara was left with children to raise. The youngest was a baby. Myrtle is widowed living with her parents at Saint James Township in Phelps County, Missouri. Her father, Thomas J. Hendrix, is 57 years old. Narcissus Durbin Hendrix is 56 years old. In the home with them is Myrtle, 25 and widowed, and her children, Floyd O'Conner, 3 and Patrick, 2. Also in the home are William, Clara and Myrtle's brother and sister, George Hendrix, 19 and Gillian Hendrix, 16.

In the 1920 United States Federal Census, William E. Hendrix, 36, is married to Mary J. Hendrix, 28. They are living in Niangua, Missouri, in Webster County, Missouri. There are no children listed.

William E. Hendrix's father, Thomas J. Hendrix, at passed away in 1928. He is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Gasconade County, Missouri. That is a Catholic Cemetery and it is also where his mother, Mary Druscilla Crider Hendrix is buried.

In the 1930 United States Federal Census, William E. Hendrix's father is deceased and his mother, Narcissus, is listed as 67 years old. She is a roomer, widowed, enumerated in the home of Charles Collier at St. James Township in Phelps County, Missouri. Clara Hendrix Tackitt, a widow, was living in Marshfield, Missouri with 4 of her children and one of Myrtle Hendrix O'Conner's children.


William Edward Hendrix married Mary Jane Letterman on December 25, 1907. Mary Jane was 18 years old. Her parents were Andrew Jackson Letterman and Sarah Margaret Trinkle Letterman. She was born January 11, 1889 in Niangua, Missouri. In the 1920 United States Federal Census, Mary is living with William Edward Hendrix in Niangua, Missouri. There is a record of Mary Jane Hendrix's marriage to William Henry Huber on March 26, 1932 in St. Louis, Missouri. Records show Mary Jane Letterman Hendrix Huber living in St. Louis, Missouri through 1940. Sometime about 1950, Mary Jane married Oscar Stever. On March 1, 1968, Mary Jane Letterman Hendrix Huber Stever passed away in Marshfield, Missouri.

At AncestryLibrary.com for the U. S. World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942, William Edward Hendrix gives his age as 59, Height as 5'4, Weight as 135 and Brown hair and brown eyes. In the year 1942, he is living in Bland, Missouri and lists his birth place as Gasconade County, Missouri. His birth date is listed as October 9, 1883. In the U. S. Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007 through AncestryLibrary.com, William Edward Hendrix lists his birth date as October 9, 1883 and his parents as Thomas J. Hendrix and Narcissus (Nrssis) Durbin.


In September 1945, William E. Hendrix was living in Hobart, Oklahoma. Narcissus Durbin Hendrix, his mother, was living with him in Oklahoma.

On September 1, 1945, Narcissus Durbin Hendrix passed away at the home of William E. Hendrix. She was 81 years old. She had fallen and fractured her hip. Some time before that she had suffered a stroke. The body was brought back to Conway, Missouri. Burial was in Reed Cemetery near Conway, Missouri. Besides William E. Hendrix, survivors were another son, George of Texas and two daughters, Mrs. Clara Tackett, Marshfield, Missouri and Gillie. Narcissus Durbin Hendrix also had one brother, Sam Durbin, of Conway, Missouri and one sister, Mrs. Anna Hardman of Springfield, Missouri.

William E. Hendrix passed away in 1953. He is buried at the Hobart Rose Cemetery in Hobart, Oklahoma.
