Biography

Thomas Alphard Hendrix, son of Thomas Jefferson Hendrix and Narcissus Durbin Hendrix, was born January 31,1893 in Gasconade County, Missouri. He may also be known as T. Alfred Hendrix.

Alfred Hendrix had two older siblings, William E. Hendrix born in 1883 and Clara Ellen Hendrix born in January 1886.

The 1900 United States Federal Census shows James A. Hendrix to be 8 years old. His brother William E. Hendrix is 16 and his sister Clara Hendrix is 14 year of age. His younger sister, Gusti M. Hendrix is 5 years old and a young baby brother, George B. Hendrix is 3 1/2 months old at the time of the census. The family is living in Bourbois Township, Gasconade County, Missouri.

In the 1910 United States Federal Census, T. J. Hendricks (this is how the spelling was for the Census), and his wife, Narcissus Hendricks are living in Washington Township in Webster County, Missouri. William Hendrix and Clara Hendrix Tackett are no longer living in the household. Clara has married William Robert Tackitt and they have their own family and household. Living in the household with Tom and Narcissus Hendrix are their children: Alfred Hendricks, 17; Myrtle Hendricks, 15; George Hendricks, 10; and Gilla Hendricks, 6. Thomas is listed as a farmer.

On September 4, 1915 in Springfield, Missouri, in Greene County, Missouri, Myrtle Hendrix married Patrick O'Conner. Patrick O'Conner and Myrtle Hendrix O'Conner had two sons. Myrtle was widowed before the 1920 United States Federal Census.

On September 30, 1917, Thomas Alphard Hendrix's Grandmother, Mary Druscilla Crider Hendrix, passed away. She was buried in Gasconade County, Missouri at St. Michael's Cemetery. She was 85 years old and had been widowed more than 50 years.

Around 1916, Thomas Alphard Hendrix married Verna Jane Stone. They had three sons and three daughters.

On March 18, 1917, Thomas Alphard Hendrix and Verna Jane Stone Hendrix had a son, Bricen Lee Hendrix.

In the U. S. World War I Draft Registration Card, Thomas Alphard Hendrix lists his address as Oklahoma. He states his birthday is January 31, 1893 and he was born in Bland, Missouri. He is married and has a wife and child.

In the 1930 United States Federal Census, Thomas A. Hendrix is living in Hobart, Kiowa, Oklahoma. He is renting his home. He states the age of his first marriage was 23. He states he is able to read and write and his occupation is a laborer and he works at odd jobs.

In the 1930 United States Federal Census, Thomas Alphard Hendrix is 36 years old living in Hobart, Oklahoma. Living in the household with him is his wife, Vernie J. Hendrix, 34; children, Bricen L. Hendrix, 12; Lora E. Hendrix, 10; Harold V. Hendrix, 7; and Nina F. Hendrix, 3 years of age.

On February 8, 1929, Thomas Jefferson Hendrix, Thomas Alfred Hendrix's father, passed away. He is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Gasconade County, Missouri. This is a Catholic Cemetery and it is also where his mother, Mary Druscilla Crider Hendrix, is buried. Thomas Jefferson Hendrix passed away on a Thursday morning, February 8, 1929, while loading hay at his home near Cleavesville, Missouri. Mr. T. J. Hendrix died suddenly as he stepped from the hay stack to his wagon. Thomas Jefferson Hendrix was 65 years of age. Besides his wife, nee Narcissus Durbin, he leaves five children: Mrs. Clara Tackitt, of Northfield, Missouri (Clara was living in Marshfield, Missouri with her family in 1929); William Hendrix, of Niangua, Missouri; Mrs. Gilly Ballance of St. James, Missouri; George Hendrix and Alfred Hendrix, who live in Oklahoma. Funeral services were held Sunday from the home to the old Catholic or Durbin Cemetery near Cleavesville, Missouri. Rev. Bruno of Clover Bottom officiated in the absence of Rev. Martin. An obituary reporting these events were published in the Gasconade County Republican, Owensville, Missouri newspaper on February 15, 1929.

In the U. S. World War II Draft Registration Cards for 1942, Thomas Alphard Hendrix is living at 709 South Monroe, Hobart, Kiowa Oklahoma. He is 49 years of age. He states he is unemployed.

At Find a Grave Memorial No. 24010516, T. Alphard Hendrix is listed as born in 1893 and passed away on September 18, 1944. He is buried at the Hobart Rose Cemetery in Hobart, Kiowa County, Oklahoma.

Verna J. Stone Hendrix passed away in 1977 and is buried at the Hobart Rose Cemetery in Hobart, Oklahoma.


On September 1, 1945, his mother, Narcissus Durbin Hendrix, passed away. She was living with his brother William E. Hendrix in Hobart, Oklahoma. There is no mention of Alfred being a survivor. His mother was 81 years old when she died. She had fallen and fractured her hip. Sometime before that she had suffered a stroke. The body was brought back to Conway, Missouri. Burial was in Reed Cemetery near Conway, Missouri. The survivors included two sons, William E. Hendrix of Oklahoma and George of Texas; and two daughters, Mrs. Clara Tackett, Marshfield, Missouri and Gillie.
