Biography

William was born in 1862 in Eden, Erie County, New York, the son of Johann Georg Heinrich and Salomea Wohlhüter. His middle name is also sometimes given as Diebold. He grew up on the family farm there. At age of 25 in 1888, he married Caroline M. Henrette Zittel in Eden. That same year, he bought 106 acres to develop where the Hamburg-North Collins (later Gowanda) State Road joined Sisson Highway in Eden. They had three children together. His farm was successful and in 1926 he sold it to two of his sons. He and his wife lived across the road. His wife Caroline died in 1950 and William passed away four months later in 1951 in Collins, NY. They are buried together in Prospect Lawn Cemetery in Hamburg, NY.

William D. Henry

William D. Henry of the Gowanda State Road died, following an illness of several years, on Feb. 9. He was 89 years of age and had been a resident of Eden all his life. Until his retirement in 1926 he had operated a vegetable farm on the Gowanda State Road, which he purchased 62 years ago, and which is now operated by his two sons, Clarence and Walter Henry. He was a charter member of the Erie County Farm Bureau and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. His wife was the late Caroline Zittel Henry, daughter of the Jacob Zittel of East Eden. Surviving are his three sons, Frank, Clarence and Walter Henry and four grandchildren, Harold and Earl Henry, Mres. Edwin E. Fitchett of Poughkeepsie and Walter Henry, Jr. Funeral services were held on Monday from the residence of his son, Clarence and burial was in Prospect Lawn Cemetery. Officiating at the services were the Rev. L. D. Zimmerman and the Rev. Frederick A. Graef.

Surname Note

The original family surnames were Heinrich and anglicized to Henry after coming to America. However, after adopting Henry for many years, the family appears to have reverted to using Heinrich in the 1870's. Henry was used in the 1850, 1855, 1860, 1865 censuses, but 'Henrich' was used in the 1875 census.

Heinrich, William D. Henry, Eden, p. o. Water Valley, was born in Eden, September 6, 1862, and was educated in the district schools. He was engaged in farming until twenty-five years of age when he purchased his present fine and valuable farm. In 1888, he married Caroline, daughter of Jacob Zittle, and they have three children: Frank, Clarence and Walter. Mr. Heinrich's grandfather, Diebold Heinrich, was a native of Elsass, Germany, and emigrated to America in 1832 with his family. He settled in Eden on a tract of wild timber land, and there made him a home in the woods. He met his death April 3, 1839, by being crushed between two logs. George Henry Heinrich, father of William, was born in Germany, October 25, 1812, and came to America with his parents when a young man. He worked in Buffalo for a time, but soon settled in Eden on a farm, and at the time of his death was the owner of 240 acres, which was divided between his sons.

George Sr.'s youngest son William D. bought a house and farm at the corner of Gowanda State Road and Sisson Highway in 1888 - (7159 Gowanda State Road, Eden, NY 10457. Map - Twp 8, Range 8, Lot 24). It was 106 acres and in bad shape. Everyone thought he paid a high price for those times - $100 per acre! The big barn was built in 1896 and finished in 1898. The lumber was sawed at Kromer's Mill.
