In the name of God, Amen, this 28th day of August, 1802, I, Mary Cathey, of the County of Mecklenburg in the state of North Carolina, being very sick and weak in body, but of sound mind and memory, thanks be to God, and calling to mind the mortality of my body and that it is appointed for all men to die, do make this as my last Will and Testament in the following manner and form:
1st, I recommend my Soul to God who gave it, my body to be buried in a Christian manner, nothing doubting, but to revive the same again at the Genral Resurrection by the mighty power of God, hoping through the martyr death and sufferings of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to receive a fair and full pardon of all my sins and to inhabit everlasting life. And as touching such worldly estate as God had pleased to bless me with in this life, I give, devise and bequeath in the following manner and form, viz:
It is my will and I order that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid and satisfied by my Executors hereinafter named.
Item. - I give and bequeath to my daughter, Jean, one negro wench named June, to her property and benefit for and during her natural life and at her death said negro, June, to go to the use and benefit of her son Archibald Waddle, to him and his heirs forever,
Item.- I give and bequeath to my daughter, Elizabeth, one negro wench named Philis, to her and her heirs forever.
Item. - I give and bequeath to my daughter, Mary, my old negro wench named Pender (?) to her and her heirs forever. Also my corner cupboard to her and her heirs forever.
Item. - I give and bequeath to my daughter Eleanor, one negro child named Ruth, during her lifetime and at her death same negro Ruth to go to the use of her son Archibald Barkley, to him and his heirs forever.
Item. - I give and bequeath to my son Archibald, one negro boy named Cuff, with all my stock of horses and cattle, with my large table, three large pewter dishes, six pewter plates, one large pot, to him and his heirs forever.
Item. - I give and bequeath to my grandson John Cathey, Archibald Cathey's son, one negro boy named Flank, to him and his heirs forever. I give and bequeath to my granddaughter, Mary Henry Cathey, one negro child named Hannah, to her and her heirs forever.
Item. - I give and bequeath to my granddaughter Esther, my son John's daughter, my bed and furniture thereto belonging to her and her heirs forever.
It is also my Will and I order that all the remainder of my estate not already disposed of shall be equally divided amongst all my children, viz., Jean, Elizabeth, Mary, Eleanor, and Archibald. And for the fair and true Executor of this my last Will and Testament, I nominate, constitute, and appoint my loving son. Archibald cathey, my Executor, hereby revoking and disannulling all former Wills and Testaments and bequests heretofore made by me, either in word or in writing, ratifying this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament.
