Notes

Minnie (Huldah M. (Henry) Van Dake) died at Lula's (Lillian Maud (Van Dake) Ten Eyck) (Note:Minnie was Lula's Mother) 12:30AM, Friday April 27. Lula brot' body to Osseo via Anoka Saturday Morning 4-28-28. John, Charlie, Alice, Lloyd, Alvina, Jennie, U.G., Hazel, Bob, Ed, Lula, Carl, Honey Girl, and Venie all drove to Osseo & went from there to Champlin for the funeral Sunday, April 29, 1928. Text Psalms 116-15, Preceeding sermon a duet, "Rock of Ages", was sung, after the sermon, "The City 4 Square" & while the remains was being viewed,"Nearer my God to Three", with variation was rendered. Floral displays were: beautiful pillow inscribed, "Mother", from children & Friends at (Quiring, MN). Spray from Charlie (Carnations, roses, and Easter lilies), Spray from Jennie, Hazel & Florence (pink roses & violets), spray of Easter Lilies from "friends at the Mill" (Fred, my father worked at the flour mill in Anoka, he was Minnie's son). When Lula arrived at Anoka Fred (my father) met her with the undertaker of Osseo, who lived at Anoka & took the body to Osseo. The undertaker had met Minnie at Berts funeral (her youngest son, who had died when kicked in the head by a bull). The funeral was held in the Methodist Church and the internment in the Champlin Cemetery. Among those known and noticed at the funeral were Bert & Grace Mountfort, O.S. Miller, Nettie Curtis, Mr & Mrs Dan Senear. Mrs Jeff Weaver was there and afterward wrote Lula a nice letter. Lula Came home with us Sunday night and left Thursday the 10th (May) for Osseo with Fred, Emma & baby (note: the baby was me, Byron Van Dake) who came for her. Minnie: born Napoli, Cattaraugus Co., New York at her Grandmother Merchants home, July 3, 1848. died April 27, 1928 at her daughters home in Blackduck, Minnesota, and buried in the Champlin Cemetery, Champlin, Hennepin County, Minnesota age 79 years, 9 Months and 27 days. Just some of my own thoughts of Minnie (my Grandmother). Minnie was born in a small village in southwestern New York, Napoli, N.Y.. Her father (my great grandfather) was a Methodist Minister, Erie Conference and served the Church as a circuit rider. The family was living in Forestville, N.Y. during the Civil War while her father served in the 49th N.Y. volunteer Infantry as a Hospital Seward. On January 1, 1870 she married Louis Byron Dake at Collins Center, New York. For many years they lived in Pleasantville, Venago County, Pa. where three chilren were born. My father, Fredrick Evelon Dake, Lillian Maud Dake, Albert Arthur Dake. Sometime later she left her husband Louis (Lewis) and never returned. At some future date she hired a man to kidnap the children while they were at recess from school. The man then rushed the kids to the Pleasantville Railroad station, where they immediately boarded a train and left for Minnesota. Her father had left western New York for Minnesota, where he was now a Minister and Doctor. Her plan was to live with her parents in Minnesota. The family lived, on the Mississippi River, in Champlin, Minnesota for some years after. Once the Children had grown, Minnie worked for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. I attempted to have this verified, but Mayo had nothing in their archives about her employment. Later she married a Mr Henry Warren Sr. and lived for a time in Grafton, North Dakota, where he died in December 1924. I was told that after my Grandfather Louis died in 1910, some time after his death she was married for awhile to a Mr Weaver, but I have no verification of this (See note below). After 1925 she lived with her daughter in Blackduck, Minnesota, where she was living when she died on April 27, 1928. I have some letters that she has written to various people and she seemed to have been very intelligent and well versed on many subjects. She died when I was only six months old, so I never really got to know her. Some time after leaving Louis (Lewis),( I have found it spelled both ways), she changed her name from DAKE to VAN DAKE. I am not sure why she did this, but it may have been to keep Lewis from finding her and the children. My father once told me the reason she changed it was to make it more fashionable or fancy, Dake by itself just did not cut it according to her. At least this was my father's story. (NOTE: Since I originally type this information I have found a letter written by my grandmother, Huldah (aka Minnie) where she shows her first marriage to LOUIS BYRON DAKE, 2nd to what looks like Webber, rather then Weaver, and 3rd to Henry Warren, Sr.. However; she also states in her letter that Mr. Webber or Weaver was still married to another person, so I guess you can disregard that as a marriage.) [4]
