Biography

W.J. Henry married Mary Tucker Farley in 1852. Their first child, William Crawford Henry was born in 1853 in Harris County, Georgia. At an unknown date they moved to Russell County, Alabama, having bought 2000 acres for a cotton plantation at Villula, just south of Seale. James Lee Henry was born in 1858. Ida Augusta "Tidy" was born in 1865. Frances Haseltine "Fanny" was born in 1866. After the Civil War they gave up the farm and moved into town. "W.J. died soon afterward and Mary undertook the running of a hotel to accommodate the travelers who came to the County Seat on legal or political business and the many "drummers" who came on the Mobile and Girard Railroad (later the Central of Georgia) to sell their products to the score or more of merchants in the lively little town." F.M. Cantwell, Russell County History, p. F-13. W.J. Henry had a sister, Elizabeth, or "Bet". She first married Tom Williams and had 6 sons & 1 daughter (Tom Williams of Columbus, Dr. Charles Williams of Columbus, Ben Williams, Jo or Josephine married Mr. Cameron of Columbus). Then Elizabeth married Wm Griggs and had 6 girls & 1 son (Ducie married Spud, Mamie, Besssie, Sally married Charlie Turre of Columbus, Lila Howard, Anna Eliza, Cooper Griggs married Sadie ? lived in Apalachicola).--info given by Mary Benton McCann, grandchild of Mary Tucker Farley Henry and W.J. Henry.
