Alexander was born about 1806. Alexander Henry ... He passed away in 1850.
This Agness Henry is Agnes Carruthers, widow of Thomas Henry as on the gravestone shown above. We can conjecture from this information that her husband Thomas had been the innkeeper until his death, after which she continued the business, and then passed it on to her son Alexander on her death on 7th June 1847. After Alexander’s death on 7th January 1848, his widow Mary inherited the business. By 1851, she had married a neighbour, Adam Earsman (or Earseman), who was recorded in the 1841 Burrance Bridge census as a labourer, aged 30. From the 1851 census information (given below) it is obvious that Mary’s second husband continued the business. It is interesting to note, however, that on Mary’s death certificate (1900) her son Thomas gives Adam Earseman’s occupation as Turnpike Roadman, which suggests that he continued his occupation of ‘labourer’ after he married Mary and became involved in running the inn along with her.
