The origins and even the correct name of Alexander Henry are uncertain. A 1790 letter from Margaret Donald to her cousin Gov. Patrick Henry at the urging of their cousin David Henry states that his name was Alexander,[1] and it's surmised that this is how the name was passed to Gov. Patrick Henry of Virginia's family and into the various genealogies in the United States for that family.
What is known and conclusions
What can be traced through contemporary records are several facts which may help shed light on the puzzle.
This man had a brother, who had a son named David Henry, who later moved to London and was an editor for Gentleman's Magazine.[2]
A record for the birth of a David Henry in Foveran, Aberdeenshire to an Alexander Henry has been found[3]
The two sons attended college where their father was called Patrick Henry[4][5]
Isabel's parents are listed as Patrick Henry and Jean Robertson[6]
Further evidence that the cousin who wrote the letter to Gov. Patrick Henry got the names confused, is the fact that their cousin David Henry's father was named Alexander. So it's improbable two brothers were named Alexander, especially when one is shown to be called Patrick in contemporary records. What's more likely is that in her old age, Margaret Donald switched the names.
As for his parents, there were two sons born of John Henry (Hendry) and Girsel Carney in Echt, Aberdeenshire named Alexander and Peter, and it's possible that Peter was actually Patrick. But their birth dates were 1687 and 1690 respectively, making it possible but rather young to have started their families. No other couples in Scotland in the time frame have been found yet to have both a Patrick and Alexander. Unfortunately the Aberdour Parish records in Aberdeen are nonextant before 1698, and if this is where the Henry brothers were born, there will be no record to be had there. Alexander (Patrick) Henry was a farmer and school teacher in Aberdour about this time,[7] so it's likely this is where he was born.
Alexander (Patrick) Henry married Jean Robertson. No record of their marriage has been found, but they are shown together as the parents for their child Isabel in 1706 in Aberdour Parish[6]. They had the following children:

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Patrick by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Patrick:
From the original dates and relationships, this profile is the Governor's grandfather, not his uncle. Patrick was his correct name - "Alexander" comes from one unreliable source.
A bio has been added that confuses this Patrick with his own son Rev Patrick (and confuses John Syme with Sarah Winston).
This entry appears to be incorrect. The Rev Patrick Henry, uncle to Patrick Henry the American Patriot, was the son of Alexander, not his brother, and his mother was Jean Robertson Henry; she was not his wife. This entry should be merged with Henry-988, I think.

Will put him back to his real self.
