The story we have always been told says that Jane was a Cherokee Indian. James came into the area of Hood's Fork with a shotgun, hunting dog and an Indian wife. He traded the shotgun for a farm. He would never tell the children where he came from. After he died the children asked their mother and she said he would never tell and "I won't either".
